Aftermarket Steering Wheel Hub Issues

So after searching furiously and reading up on steering wheel installs, I come to this:

http://project-definition.com/wp-con...2013/07/03.jpg

My hub cannot go all the way in as it is sitting on top of two connectors (female) (pictured above).

These are the two connectors:

http://project-definition.com/wp-con...2013/07/01.jpg

and they are making contact with the hub at these two locations:

http://project-definition.com/wp-con...2013/07/02.jpg

I cannot find a way to rid of these connectors (nor is it safe to) and now I'm blaming the hub design itself.

And I have both NRG and Worksbell short hub. They both don't fit.

So does anyone (particularly the people with aftermarket steering wheels) know what the work around is on this? There is no DIY on this forum... All i can find are 350z DIYs and they do not have those two connectors.

le sigh. spent all day trying to figure this out =(

dimitarm 07-03-2013 05:43 AM

i recently bought nrg complete kit with steering wheel and it doesnt fit my nissan 370z (2011)... i am really dissapointed

dimitarm 07-03-2013 05:45 AM

All of you who are planning to buy nrg hubs for their 370z's please dont do it, it is a waste of money!!!!

You have to remove the steering wheel sensor too. The piece that you said has the ''two connectors''. Once this is removed it will fit perfect. But once it is, I've heard the slip light or one of the those lights will be on. Mine already were for other reasons so not sure the direct result.

^thanks! Yeah i called NRG earlier and we DO have to remove the clockspring. All it was is to remove the bottom plastic housing and getting to the three screws tying the whole clockspring unit down. While removing the clockspring, there are two clips on each side of the unit... once you get them out, wiggle it free. Place the hub on top then screw it down. Replace the bottom plastic for the housing and you are ready to install the aftermarket steering wheel.

WARNING the air bag, VDC OFF, and the slip light (all three) will be on. I forgot to mention having to plug in the horn adapter but i didnt do that because i could not find instructions/directions on what holes i had to plug them in. ill post some pics when i get home.

find the horn and cruise wires in the column, identify and relocate them.i did it on my frontier no problem.and slice the plugs off with a dremel (making sure the hub will go down first) if you are making this install permanent then you need to be buying a backup clock spring if you decide you want to sell the car

dimitarm 07-04-2013 09:21 AM

and this way the vdc/abs/slip lights will be on? if so why is abs bypass wires included in the package?

dont have a clue on the z as i dont have mine anymore.on the frontier,i deleted the steering wheel angle sensor which is what was responsible for cutting fuel on me.actually the deletion was by accident and im glad it was.the swervy light stayed on but not after i opened the cluster :-0.clean display is what i have .good luck

nismo13807 07-24-2013 11:47 PM

What he said^^

McdreamyZ 08-09-2013 05:18 PM

iv installed the nrg hub on with no lights wat so ever i drilled a big enough hole on the hub to where the plug gos in and i slaped it on didnt have to remove any connections

dimitarm 08-09-2013 05:24 PM

i wanted to do the same but some people told me that there is danger of cracking because the hub gets weaker

Mengly 08-21-2013 03:14 PM

gonna cut mine as well

Guys if i remove the clockspring behind the steering wheel and airbag light comes on, does that mean that all of the airbags in the car will go off?

No. Just unplug the battery and let it sit for 10 minutes. Just a safe practice

scruffydog 01-25-2014 07:09 PM

Any update on this guys?

I just bought a Bell Works short hub and it came with 2 bypass for harness and a horn harness. NONE of it works.

The horn harness isn't plug and play, i'm sure the wiring is wrong.
And also the airbag, VDC, traction control light is on.

Sounds like you might have tripped something while installing the hub.. or some other issue. Try resetting the ECU to clear those lights? I have the same setup and didn't have any issues.

thanks turns out I had the clockspring & the hub mis-aligned with the actual steering axle. My marks didn't line up b/c I accidentally used the wrong tick mark for alignment.

By the way, I have a Works Bell Short hub and didn't have any issues with needing to remove any clock spring.

My Hub kit came with 2 fuses which attaches to the orange and yellow plug and it does plug and play and does not trip on the VDC or Traction control.

However, I'm still having issue getting the horn to work because i think the wiring harness provided (wire location) is incorrect.

Also my air bag light is not turning off due to my aftermarket seat. even with a 4.7 ohm 1/2Watt resistor 5% error and reset procedure, i'm still stuck with a flashing Airbag light. I even tried 2 different brand ones too....frustrated.

Hope this helps everyone, any help back with the horn or seat airbag would be appreciated. I've followed the other thread but still no luck.

Which wheel do you have? I have the works bell short hub too (for the Z34), and it works great. The Personal horn that I have grounds directly to the inside of the quick release/hub, so I never got that to work. Not sure why yours doesn't work though.
For the seat, are you using a 4.7ohm or 4.7K ohm resistor? I couldn't find the right one at Radioshack, so I picked up a group of 10ohm 1/2watt resistors and wired 3 of them in parallel which gives me 3.3ohms. You should be able to find these at any local radioshack. I cut the plug off the airbag side and soldered them on there, no problems.

synolimit 03-15-2014 12:57 AM

If the abs, airbag, VDC, traction control ect all the lights where on, what does that mean for everything?

You no longer in an accident could set off ANY air bag?

The traction controlled is disabled, the same as if you pushed the button off?

You no longer have VDC as if you unplugged the yaw sensor?

And what about abs? Your brakes are 50/50 I know if you pull the abs fuse. Is this the same thing?

So how are those black connectors removed? I really didn't understand because the pictures showing the illustrations are broken.

I'm thinking of changing mine.. Any advice on which works best? I'm new at this and don't want to mess it up.

kenchan 05-14-2015 08:00 AM

i currently use a WorksBell on my G with a MOMO steering wheel. very nice.

i'd get that or a Daikei if they are available for our cars. they come with the two resistors and easy to install.

i lol'ed at that nissan takata airbag recall. my G might be included but the steering wheel is in my storage ready for self combustion. :rofl2:
i guess i will aim it at my dumbarse neighbor's house.

it can be done but there is some cutting of the hub required.
I have a post here on the forum showing how it should be done.
find it and if you still dont understand feel free to ask me.
Btw i have Nrg hub + Nrg Quick release + momo steering installed.
Vdc, Abs, Airbag everything is working normal.
The only downside is you cant use the cruise control.

nismo13807 05-14-2015 10:39 PM

anyone got their horn to work? i have the works bell short hub and nrg quick release with sparco wheel

Its one wire for the horn on urs right? Wat I do is make a pigtail wire and sandwich it between the hub and steering wheel to make ground. GL

i dont use the quick release type on my G as the theme is dressup, not tuner car sports theme. the regular type that looks similar to the daikei you linked looks similar to my works bell hub.

kenchan 05-18-2015 11:30 AM

btw, i luv this alignment spacer. just in case your splines dont line up perfectly:

daikei as01. i have the one that works on my Momo in my G. perfect Noon each and every time. :D

I had a new personal steering wheel installed and it now throws the vdc off and skid lights on.
I read somewhere that steering position sensor may cause this and my steering wheel is sitting at 10 oclock position while driving straight.
The light goes off for a little bit after restarting but comes back on after 5 mins of driving.
I didn't have time to get alignment done today but will get it done soon.
Will getting alignment and correcting the steering position sensor fix this?

ok update

all you have to do is dremel off the right connector

unless your wheel uses it then you might be out of luck (mine didnt)

also

he is right it is the 3rd wire from the right not the left nrg messed up for the horn

easy fix also tho unclip the connector and pull the wire out
