Wrapped gauges and instrument cluster
whats up everyone, I just got done with my week long project of wrapping my gauge bezels and instrument cluster cover. I did it with a Carbon fiber and orange Kevlar combo. This was NOT vinyl hence why it took me a week and lots of hard work. I think it came out great and i love the color combo, it compliments all the orange lighting and gauges. so here are some pics.:happydance:

Not bad just a little rough around the edges.
Wow you did that yourself? That's impressive. Did you use a cf wrapping kit?
Very nice it is a little rough but still awesome! Nice job!!!
Yha the material was too thick for the under piece so I had to cut it with a dremel hence the roughness. But it still looks great. That stuff is a pain to work with but I'm sure a few more time doing that I will be a master at it.
Did you use latex goes of something cause that resin has fiberglass in it correct
Yes I did, and a resperator too. The resin was a special kind for the colored Kevlar too but it is all pretty much the same stuff. But I just bought the materials and went from there, no kit or anything because they were all black CF and no colors
Where did you buy everything from? I may be wrapping my center cubby and surround.

You should do a DIY if you do. I may attempt this.
should just buy the CF cover from evo r or carbon signal or have cf element wrap them..
I used CF Element with our other Z and granted the quality is top notch it is pretty expensive. I have new bills and have to cut back on the car spending so im trying to do a little more myself.
Overlays are cheaper but look like overlays...not my cup of tea. |

Thats where i got m stuff from. They were awesome in getting my order sent out quickly. The only other things i needed to buy was a mixing tub $00.67, nylon paint brushes $15, nylon gloves $1.20 for 10, paint fume resperator $15 at home depot. I also used my wifes hair dryer to get the bubbles out. (DONT USE WITH STICKY GLOVES ON OR YOU WILL BE BUYING ANOTHER, JUST BUY A SHITTY ONE FOR HOBBY USE ONLY) |
can you sand the edges with 1500 or even 2000grit, and add a dab of clearcoat along the edge? should cure this roughness look.
not that it looks bad or anything as it is. GJ. :) |

I guess you could. I woudnt see why not, on the top i did 600g, up to a 1800g sand paper then a polish to make it silky smooth. Im also debating on putting a coat of wax to seal it but IDK. its a lot of work for minimal results.
usually you want to seal up the CF ends to prevent moisture to get in. in this case, clearcoat is one of the better approaches.
you can just get a duplicolor touchup bottle clearcoat and use that. |
I didn't do any clear coat. It was just 3 coats of the resin and after the last coat I sanded it down then using a polishing compound I used a machine to polish it to a shine. But now that kenchan brings up moisture I think I might seal it up now.

:iagree:
I haven't done it yet, I was just responding to Mr&Mrs. But yes, most resign will have UV protection in the resign so there is no need for clear coat. If you get all your materials and find out the UV protection isn't in the resign then you can us the clear coat. Clear coating CF Hoods, Wings CF Parts that are expose to sun 24/7 is always a good investment. Most companies us bare minimum when it comes to keeping down there cost to make the parts. Clear coat doesn't cost much and its insurance on your hard work.. :tiphat: |
