Stuck hatch...

Is anybody else having issues with the rear hatch not opening when the button is depressed? It makes the sound and delatches, but it is just stuck there and i have to squeeze my fingers in the tiny gap and open it. Anything I could do to prevent this?

Thanks guys

PS: My 04 350z had the same problem but it didn't happen until about 3 years after I bought it. (When the hatch pumps started to loose strength)

SpawnAeroJohn 07-15-2009 12:11 PM

We had this problem with Bullittes Z after we put everything back together. We forgot to put the tiny bumper feet at the two ends of the hatch where they are like tiny springs in rubber shoes. When you close the hatch those springs compress and have tension on them. When you open the hatch the springs pop the hatch up. Your springs might be worn out already (doubtfull) or maybe they are gone?

SiXK 07-15-2009 12:15 PM

sometimes mine does that, makes the noise and pops open a bit but not all the way, so its still latched enough that you can't open it. If I press the button again, it clears that little catch and opens fine.

SpawnAeroJohn 07-15-2009 12:21 PM

Keep in mind the hatch is a very heavy piece.

Diversion 07-15-2009 12:22 PM

Mine doesn't always fully unlatch when I hit the button.. It's been hit or miss. It hasn't annoyed me to the point of trying to fix it or take it into the dealer.

CAN-ZED 07-15-2009 12:42 PM

im having the same issue, notice it happens more when it is hot outsaide

Premo34WV 07-15-2009 01:13 PM

:iagree: It definitely does it more when its hot....but it shouldn't be sticking...? Maybe I could look into getting stronger springs to pop it up before the pumps take over

That's the trick! (or just hold the button down a little longer for a full cycle of the latch.)

FricFrac 07-15-2009 02:39 PM

Aha! I thought it was just a really cool feature to cause frustration to the owner. I have to either hold the button down and pull the hatch up or press it twice - even then I need to lift it after the first push to get it to unlatch the second time. Anyone had theirs in for a fix yet?

arcticreaver 07-15-2009 02:58 PM

i did but i figured it out. you just have to press the button and hold it longer. not just a quick tip.

kdo2milger 07-15-2009 03:24 PM

wow...im glad to know its not just me having this issue...i was thinking to start that topic here too...

so the trick is to hold the button longer...

kdo2milger 07-28-2009 05:08 PM

holding the button in longer does not work for me...

i have to hit the button on the initial attempt, and then hit the button again to gain access...

Lloydy 07-28-2009 05:17 PM

No, holding the button doesn't work for me either. Was in the dealership on Friday for another issue and told them about this, but of course it wouldn't do it while I was there
But now I'm wondering (as this happens more when it's hot - which it always is at the moment here in Texas), is the rubber seal sticking to the hatch and that's why it's not releasing properly?

it was mentioned that the heat could be a contributer...

its werd though, its always on the intitial attempts for that day that I need to hit the button twice...after that it opens on the first attempt:icon14:

Yeah exactly, hence me not being able to show them in the dealership. I've noticed a slight rubber residue (for want of a better word) on the hatch where the seal would meet it when it's closed. I'm going to clean/polish that off and see if it improves any.

This was a big issue on the original 350Z. you could try the two penny trick as most of us with 350Z had to do but it does not always work. Nissan needs to address this, but probably won't unless enough people complain.

If mine does this when I get it in a couple of months you can bet I will be complaining and taking it in until it gets addressed one way or the other.

hows that 2 penny trick go?

Kirkster 07-28-2009 06:52 PM

go to that dreaded site my350z.somethingorother and search in the Maintenance and Repair section for "Rear Hatch Opening Fix"

Page 2 post number 40 goes into graphic details...

I am sure this will void your warranty ;)

rudi 07-28-2009 07:42 PM

I have the same issue. Holding the button doesn't help and I don't believe it's temperature related as we in Australia are currently in our winter and it's been happening with ambient temps of about 8 deg C.

kdo2milger 08-05-2009 12:42 PM

evidentally there is a TSB out for the hatch bump stops on the 350z...supposidly there are stiffer springs that replace the springs in our bump stops. however theres ppl complaining that even with the new springs installed they are still having issues...

and no TSB for us yet?
yet we are having the same issues with ours...

has anyone asked their dealership to see if the 350z TSB covers the 370z?

and the penny trick looks like it would work, i will give a shot later on today...

basically all you do is:

-remove the bump stops from both sides

-peel pack the rubber boots

-take out the springs

-drop two pennies into each boot

-re-insert the springs

-re-attach the boots to the bump stop mechanism

-re-install the bump stops

-done...

kdo2milger 08-05-2009 12:51 PM

also found this part number for the new style hardware...

84415CD71A $32.00 $0.00 $24.00
Lift gate - Gate and hardware - Lift gate - Spring
Spring 2003 - 2008

kdo2milger 08-05-2009 07:50 PM

I just did the two penny trick. And it seemed to have more of a forced upwards push...which makes me think it works...

I'll check it again in the morning to see if it was just a fluke...

FricFrac 08-05-2009 09:40 PM

Holding the button never worked for me. Its either press the button pull up on it when I'm one handed or pull up with the other hand while I hold the button down...

interesting, let us know if this works consistently after several days, if so ill try it
this issue really is becoming a pain in the A$$

kdo2milger 08-06-2009 12:54 PM

just went out and checked it...

and to my dissapointment it did not fully unlatch...I had to push the button twice...

but, it did seem to have more of a push up than before...

so I am going for 3 pennies on each side and will test it again later...

kdo2milger 08-07-2009 02:31 PM

found this service bulletin, Im going to the dealership to see if i can get the new springs.

Service Bulletins Nissan Cars

Lloydy 08-07-2009 03:25 PM

Be interesting to hear what they say

kdo2milger 08-07-2009 05:33 PM

Well I went to the Nissan Dealership and spoke with the service department.

He looked it up and there has not been a TSB released for the 370z for this issue yet. They are not allowed to use a 350z TSB on the 370z...

more to follow, working on getting some pics off of my cell phone sd card...

kdo2milger 08-07-2009 07:03 PM

so here it is...the 350z replacement spring lift part number changed from 84415-CD71A to 84415-CD715, price is $32.00 EA.

I am going to start a new thread with this info and a phone number to nissan for people with the same issue to call and file a concern in the hopes that nissan will release a TSB for 370Z owners as well. This way we arent spending $64.00 bucks of our money to fix a manufacturing defect...

*!!ATTENTION!!*

Hey folks, AK turned my thread thats in the post above into a poll.

Could you all do me a huge favor and cast your vote there please?

heres the link to the poll again...

kdo2milger 08-10-2009 10:15 PM

So I went from two pennies on each side to three... I'll give it a day or so to see if that fixes it permantly...

still waiting to see how Nissan handles this issue, but in the meantime 6 cents is cheaper than $64.00!

kdo2milger 08-11-2009 07:41 PM

Three Pennies Seemed to do the trick for me!!!

I have had a 100% success rate at opening the trunk with three pennies on each side!!!

so, where does that leave us? who knows...for now i'll will leave it as is and still engage Nissan to acknowledge this issue...

josh 11-04-2009 11:34 AM

TSB for 370Z hatch problem

I went to my Nissan dealer today to have an oil change service.
I complained about the sticky hatch and was told that the TSB just came out today for the 370Z sticky hatch problem.
The dealer is ordering the a new set of springs for me.
