370z wont start no power . Where to start

2009 370z 6 speed manual.
so all in one day that morning check engine light came on then the key light,
ran a few errands with no problems. then let is set for a couple hrs and when to leave parents house, NOTHING. Battery is fully chargeed. lights work ect.
hit start without clutch and it wont go to acc so something is shuting the juice down. i try to put key in slot nothing still . after a quick search i find the dreaded steering lock mechanisim. ive beat it to death and still no start. Plus i noticed my steering was not locked. i could steering it on to trailer so i wonder if this is my problem or not. ( but number on it is of the old style)
Is there a way to by pass this to test and see if i need a new on with out spending $500 +. what about the ipdm can it be checked.
what items can shut the car down. while i was hauling it home stoped by advance and the cheap scanner wont even comunicat with care without it powering on. any suggestion appreciated. i DONT care a bit to tear this thing apart my self if anyone has a fix , never had a care to dealer that wasnt under warranty and dont want to start now.

Sounds like your SLU has failed. There are several things to try before replacing the SLU. You can find links to details at http://www.the370z.com/engine-drivet...heel-lock.html.

The first thing to try is smacking the SLU a few times. This may cause the locking pin to retract fully and make the internal microswitches.

If that doesn't work, you can remove the SLU and manually push the locking pin to the retracted position.

If you manage to get the SLU unlocked, do NOT turn the car off until you pull the fuse or snip the wire. You can find details at the link above.

Good luck.

Does it have to be bolted on. As I have it hanging down but plugged in.
Could it still be locked if I could steer car on trailer. I won't get a chance to work on it till tomarrow but I have done beat that little box to death.

It does not have to be bolted in place.
The pin may have retracted far enough to release the steering column but not far enough to make the microswitches. Since you have the unit out, you may be able to push the pin in manually and make the uswitches.
Look through the posts about fixing SLU problems at the link given previously. Lots of details and pics.

didnt get home till late but wanted to try something. plugged steering lock back up and while holding it locking mechanisim in my had manually pushed the lock pin all the way in and then tried to start car. still nothing. Should this have started it? or can the lock still be my problems. just wanting to make sure thats the problem before buying a new one. if i could by pass it long enough to start car i would glad to buy it. ive read many of the forums post and seems everyone just buys the part and it fixes it. but is there a test to know this is it or has anyone bought the steering lock and it not fixed it?

Judging by your symptoms, I'm pretty sure it's the SLU. You may want to get confirmation from someone else before proceeding.

As far as I know, there is no way to bypass the SLU temporarily. In addition to the two switches, there is an electronic circuit that sends a signal to the car - the switches could be faked, but I haven't seen anybody report being able to fake the other signal.

I suggest beating the SLU like a red-headed step-child to see if you can free it. If that fails, there is at least one DIY explaining how to disassemble the SLU.
