Sound Deadening my trunk and hatch! (Second Skin Audio)
 

So I decided to buy some supplies from secondskinaudio to sound deaden our Bearings in a can trunk.

I bought 36 sq feet (20 tiles) of damplifier PRO, 1 gallon of spectrum sludge, and 2 sheets of luxury liner pro (18 sq feet).

So I started out by removing all the stuff in the trunk and the rear panels and started laying down the damplifier pro and rolling it down as best I could, i put it every where i could, i ended up using 16 tiles for the trunk which is about 28 sq feet, I still have 4 tiles left that i will be putting on the hatch and if any is left on the doors.

I then "painted" the spectrum liquid all over the trunk everywhere i could reach to, did multiple coats and used about 3/4th of the gallon on the trunk, I will be using the rest on the outside of the wheel wells after i take the wheels off and under the trunk after i can take the heat shield off.. The spectrum goes on purple and dries black so it's easy to see where you've applied it.

Right now im driving around with the bare trunk and i can already tell a difference, i still hear the pebbles hitting the wheel wells though, but im hoping it'll lessen when i add the spectrum to them and after i add the luxury liner pro and add all the covers.

I'll be putting the luxury liner pro next weekend hopefully after the spectrum has had proper time to cure. I will also be adding some dense foam on top of the luxury liner in all the dead space in order to help reduce a bit more noise but to prevent stuff from moving by adding pressure against the panels.

Just to let everyone know, this is a very tedious job and probably overkill for the difference it makes, but if it helps at all then it's worth it to me. I am confident when i finish it'll be a big difference.

looking good I did this to mine over the summer it really helped. Make sure you add a lot to the wheel wells. The only difference I did was I used regular spectrum and sprayed the hatch area after laying all of the damp Pro. I bet the spectrum sludge would work great on the underside of the floor. It took forever to spray a real thick coating of spectrum underneath

very good thing to do. I did that and slapped a box with a solo baric 15 sub and a new floor to cover the original and now its nice and quiet. Well until i turn the radio up

So I received the luxury liner pro and finished installing it wherever i could and put all the panels and everything back in and WOW what a difference. The exhaust is quieter, the bass kicks deeper and harder now and i don't hear noise from the back anymore!! Now it just comes from the doors but that is acceptable! no rattles!

Recap:

- Installed Second Skin Audio Damplifier Pro SPL Tiles everywhere on the trunk including wheel wells.
- Put Second Skin Audio Spectrum liquid all over the trunk on top of the tiles, about 4mm thick.
- Put damplifier pro under the spare tire, on top of the wheel wells and on the back part of the trunk where the release button is and then another layer on top after i put all the panels on and under the carpet.
- I also put an spl tile under the trunk, on top where the mufflers go, i took off the heat shield, then i put spectrum on top of that.
- I took the wheels off and put spectrum on the outside of the wheel wells.
- I also removed the small cover from the hatch door and put some spectrum on there.
- After I put all the panels on i grabbed some foam i had (dense packing foam), looks like studio sound deadening foam, and put it on all the big holes around the spare tire.

I now have absolutely no rattles and no road noise, and when going over pebbles it actually sounds so much less resonated, kind of like a rubber mallet instead of bearings in a can.

I am extremely happy and i'd say spending the money in this case was well worth it even though it was expensive.

How much did it cost? If you don't mind me asking..

About $375 + 100 for shipping so around $500 worth including 36 sq ft damplifier pro, 18 sq ft luxury liner pro and a gallon of spectrum.

Just wondering, where did you end up placing the Luxury Liner? I didn't see you mention it in the recap. Just place it flat on top of the liquid layers when it's all cured?

Sound Deadening
 

I read many of the notes on reducing external noise and see many different approaches. One thing I hate to do is spend a lot of time and money on a project and then be disappointed with the results.

Has anyone ever had an opportunity to see what has been done on the G37 to make it quieter? It would seem that it would be really helpful to know where the differences are between the 370Z and G37.

Just the fact that the G37 isn't a hatchback with no rear seat probably accounts for a 10 db or more difference. I had a G35 and on occasion when I would have the rear seat folded forward to allow large items in the trunk, the increase in cabin noise was quite noticeable. I believe the G37 has an aluminum hood like the Z, but when you also add aluminum doors and a hatch to the Z you are going to get noise increases. Plus the tires on the Z are major noisemakers, especially if you live in an area with grooved freeways surfaces. When I hit a patch of smooth asphalt on the freeway the drop in noise is startling.

Thanks for the report Bandit, that's awesome you took the time to explain before and after, and the pics and instructions too. I love my Z but hate the noise. Next summer when my tires are noticeably worn I'm planning on getting the quietest tires I can and then noise proofing the rear. I may go with GTMAT but not sure since Tracie's no longer with them.
