JDM Fog Light Installed - Blinking Option

Hey guys!

I finished the install of my JDM fog light last night. I ordered the light and long harness from Z1, and then ordered the Blinking Smart Stop Delay Version from Kahtec. I've seen a bunch of different ways to wire this up, but what I wanted was to have it only come on when I hit my brakes. So...the way mine works is that it is off until I touch the brakes. Once I hit the brakes...it will blink really quick and then go solid. If I touch the brakes again within 8 seconds (like in stop n go traffic) then it will not blink; but instead go straight to solid. After 8 seconds...the light resets and will blink again.

I really like this way because (just as the 3rd brake light) it's not on with the rest of the taillights and will really catch your attention because it kind of comes out of no where. We're all expecting to see a third brake light...but a fourth brake light...that blinks?!?!?! I like it lol. Here's a quick video of it. Let me know if you guys have any questions on how to wire it up.

Also...if anyone knows how to embed the video into my post...please let me know!

To embed a video from youtube, simply take the specific code for the vid that comes after the "/watch?v=" and copy that. Then hit the "YouTube" icons in the reply to thread window, and between [you tube][/you tube] paste that video code. So for your video, it would be: YLHLdWCk4RM

Like this:

Hmm...for some reason I tried to edit and do that...but it didn't work. Oh well lol.

Figured it out!! :D

I thought about going that route...but I figured that might get annoying to the person behind me; especially in morning traffic lol.

I want to hook up a switch where I can control when it's on/off/blink. Is that possible? I have the EVOR fog light.

Yeah that is possible. I think that's the way Simota did it in his DIY; or at least something similar?

No problem man!

Josh,
Nice! Glad to see that the install went well. Run into any unforseen snags during the install?

robones 10-29-2012 08:32 AM

Good job Josh. This is by far the best setup. I also have the JDM Fog light hooked up to the 8-second relay. You have the formula 1 effect and you don't annoy the people behind you in rush hour traffic :)

Thanks Dustin!! The only snag I hit was trying to get the two nuts off the original plug; as others stated...the nut and stud just spun. I spent probably about 30 minutes cutting them off with my Dremel.

I also used a wire clamp to tap into the taillight harness instead of just cutting it. I think the only thing I'll change is the bulb...I'm going to put an LED in there. :D

You're exactly right! I was really worried about annoying people (not to mention that if it's constantly blinking everytime I hit the brakes, it could cause an accident) in rush hour traffic. This morning was the first time I drove my car since the install and I noticed that the car behind me never followed too closely. Even if someone squeezed in behind me...the first time I hit the brakes made them back off lol.

Oh that's a normal reaction to the fog light Hooked up as a break light. people will stay clear about 4-5 feet away when they notice the light blinking. You get so used to people staying away far behind that the times when people get close to you (normal) distance you start to panic thinking you are going to get rear ended! haha

Haha...true that. Did you swap out the stock bulb for an LED? I am planning on doing that in the next couple of weeks.

robones 10-29-2012 08:46 AM

I have not done that yet because I am not 100 % sure an LED bulb will be brighter than the stock bulb. The JDM fog light is already brighter than the LED tail lights. Of course if you make the switch, you will benefit from a faster on an off pulsation than the stock bulb.

That's what I'm going for. I think it'll actually work a bit better since it'll either be on or off...there won't be that dimness inbetween like with a dual filament bulb.

I would like to try this out too but I'm up in Canada so my car comes with the fog light factory installed. The switch is on the stalk with the headlights. Any idea where the best place is to tap into the wiring and place the module? :tiphat:

joshs09slvrZ 10-30-2012 10:51 AM

How does your light function now? You can just flip it on or off?

If you wanted it to blink like in the video, you'd have to get the module and then wire it between the taillight harness and the fog light. I have my module hidden away inside the trunk behind the panels.

Yes it's an on off switch that resets to off when the car is turned off. I guess I would have to intercept the fog light wiring and tie it through the module to the brake light. The factory switch would then do nothing. I think I'll search for a wiring diagram just to see what's what.

I would think you should be able to tie the module directly into the fog light...you just have to make sure you turn it to the "on" position everytime you get in your car.
