Simota, aren't you the guy that was brave enough to tackle blacking out your own headlights?

If you can accomplish that then I don't think you would have any problem spraying your own wheels. I'm sure there is a paint out there that can hold up well, and if you screw them up, or it doesn't hold up I bet you could get a used set of stock rims for the same price as a powdercoat job.

Caravanshaka 07-03-2009 04:11 PM

powdercoating is about $400 for a set of wheels. The used 18's have been on ebay for around 1k, I think 600-800 is a fair price for them. Powdercoating is far superior to painting for the finish. Paint will chip with normal driving where powdercoating can take that abuse.

of course, a powdercoater is going to fully strip the wheels finish before they coat, so trying it on your own first will only cost you the time and materials since you can just bring it to the powdercoater if you aren't happy with the finish.

hey caravanshaka correct me if im wrong but i believe powdercoating weakens forged rims.....becauase of the extreme heat that occurs...? and there is a special type of powdercoating that is for forged rims...? and... sadly no one can do powdercoating on my island in that matter.... just regular powdercoating...

fly yellow 07-03-2009 04:47 PM

powdercoating won't weaken your rims to any degree that you would have to worry. I had forged aluminum motorcycle rims powdercoated and never had an issue.

Caravanshaka 07-03-2009 05:12 PM

powdercoating forged rims will not weaken them in the least, it is a myth. Check out Phimosis' thread where he got his Rays powdercoated.

Also, if you have the 18's, they are not forged.

your stock wheels are powdercoated if im not mistaken..

Caravanshaka 07-03-2009 10:12 PM

true, quite a few stock wheels come powdercoated for durability. I don't know for sure about ours, but it is likely.

Phimosis 07-06-2009 03:19 PM

Youtube "rays wheels powdercoating" and there is a video that shows how Rays makes forged aluminum wheels, then it shows them powdercoating some Volk wheels. I forget which ones, but it tells you in the video.

Looks MUCH better with the black wheels
you keep beating me to things...I've had my black wheels ordered for over 6 weeks now...you did your headlights less than a week before I did mine...if you install high flow cats tomorrow I'm going to have to say you are stalking me :bowrofl:

I'd go with the BC coilovers if I were you, probably the BR series if you aren't planning on tracking the car very often =)

No problem, you will be much happier with the durability of the powder compared to the paint.

My high flow cats will be here today, hopefully getting them on by this weekend
