Fuel Guage Sender Replacement - Fuel Odor
I had the fuel guage sender replaced by the dealer today, and after filling it up, it's functioning properly. But, right as the service rep handed me my paperwork, I was told that I should leave the windows open for a couple hours to air out the fuel odor. I drove around for quite a while, mostly at highway speed, and then let the car sit with the windows open for a few more hours. It still has a strong fuel smell. From what I could see, it looks like they might have accessed the fuel tank behind the rear seats via the interior, as the seats were tilted all the way forward when I saw my car. Also, I brought the car in with the tank less than 1/4 full. Did they do this repair correctly? Should they have accessed the tank via the interior? I have not heard of anyone else with residual fuel odor after getting the fuel sender replaced.

Yes the access to the fuel pump and fuel guage sender are behind the passenger seat. There could easly be fuel fumes but they might of spilled a little in the car prolonging the odor. Which might need to be cleaned properly. Especially if it got in the carpet.

I haven't done this repair on the 370z, but I just replaced a fuel sending unit on the wife's eclipse and to access it, I had to take out the fuel pump under the rear seat. No matter how careful you are, a tiny bit of gas will spill on something. It smelled like gas for a few days, but it will go away. If it doesn't go away in a few days, you might want to have them check on it again. If our fuel pump / system is anything like other cars I've worked on, they might of not tightened the fuel pump assembly correctly and fuel is splashing up causing fumes.

FWIW, I had both fuel guage sending units replaced in my 2009 and there was no gas smell when the dealer returned the car to me.
