Silver Shifter Ring Trim Keeps Popping Up, Any Ideas How To Fix?

Sorry I haven't been able to be on the forum for a bit, but life has been busy.

I thought I'd chime in quickly here at lunch with a question.

For those of you that have done a mod like a new stereo or the automatic shifter boot thing, where you have to remove the shifter trim, I am having an issue. The silver shifter ring trim keeps slowly popping up. The pressure clips underneath just aren't holding it down, and with the slight vibrations from the road, it creeps up after a while. The velvet like pads from the factory have also slipped away and aren't doing much of anything.

My first thought was to bend the clips to make them tighter, but they don't really bend. So then I tried replacing the velvet pads with velcro to add some thickness for the clips to grab. But it's not working well either.

I'm thinking the ultimate solution would be to make some indentations for the clips to grab into. I would use a crayon to put some wax on the under side of the ring. Then put it on completely, pushing it down well. Then take it back off. Using where the clips marked up the crayon to show where they actually stop touching, I would then use a dremel tool and make slight sideways indentation slot cuts in those spots. That way, the clips actually have an indention to snap into.

So has anyone else had the same problem? Does anyone have any good ideas how to fix? The obvious answer would be to slap some glue on the clips, but I don't want to do that just in case I need to get inside the dash again. Your thoughts / ideas / recommendations / solutions are all welcome.

Thanks for your help in advance.

wrap 3M automotive mounting tape (or vhb) on the metal clips. then push it down.

Hey kenchan, what's up? Been away a bit myself, other priorities lately.

Anyway, yeah, this certainly might be an option, probably the next step. If it doesn't work then maybe the dremel. My only thinking is that the tape will grab before I actually get it all the way on, which won't be good either.

Thanks for your input.

bonzo- :hello: the mounting tape stretches so you shouldn't have issues pushing the metal clips into the holes on the console side. it will reshape itself and lock.

at least that's how ive been fixing dash trims in general when the clips were worn or the holes get too big. my Z has been pretty good with me opening up the dash about 5-6 times though. :)

So I think I fixed my problem. One week into it and so far so good.

Check out what I did here.
