the cheap $18 rear view camera

I finally finished installing it today. I just want to tell you guys that you shouldn't bother with the camera. The viewing angle is awful as it isn't wide, the resolution is suspect at best, especially at night. Yes it is cheap, but I am not sure if it is worth the labor and time to install it. So do it at your own risk, just don't have high hopes for it.

The lines on it did work as the red dot is the farthest you can go without hitting stuff. I wired mine so it turns on with the engine, but with an interrupter switch so I can override it to turn it off manually in the trunk.

man you guys are harsh. i will take some pictures when I get home so you can see.

MattP725 03-01-2012 02:47 PM

I have this camera and I love it... only complaint is night visibility is pretty bad... for the price I would buy it 100x over.

kenchan 03-01-2012 02:47 PM

hey matt- would the visibility improve if you turn on the rear fogs or no? (not that im looking into buying. i have a pioneer camera on mine).

cossie1600 03-01-2012 02:54 PM

Must be bad karma. Car cant start now, I think I killed the battery when I worked on iy for an hr last night

kenchan 03-01-2012 02:57 PM

yah, you'd want it hooked up to a battery charger when you work on your car's electronics without engine running...

cossie1600 03-01-2012 03:10 PM

You wouldnt think a little camera can kill a 12v. I had 9 when I troed to start it

you had your accessory turned on right? that will drain quite a bit of juice.

cossie1600 03-01-2012 04:22 PM

Yeah car was in on position but I turnes off the heater

kenchan 03-01-2012 04:27 PM

yah, next time hook up a charger on the battery while the car is in that mode. 2A is plenty.

My rear fog is always on... infact it blinks in reverse... usually at night I see a dim picture with some bright red flashing on the ground. I'm not a camera guy but I would assume this means the luminems or whatever are insufficient. I'll try and post a pic next time I'm in the car at night vs day. I've had no battery drain issues but mine is wired to the accessory lead...

One issue I did have was that I don't get the grid lines on my screen. I had them show once the first time I used it but after that they disappeared. I am not sure if the headunit or the camera embeds these. For $20 I can easily replace it though since I already have the wiring.

MattP725 03-01-2012 06:10 PM

Just to note... the JDM fog might work better since it is brighter than the EVO-R when static.

i see... yah, ive had no issue seeing at night via my pioneer camera. and with the jdm fog lamp i can see even better. :)

but you know, this thing costs like 10x more so that could be why.

MattP725 03-01-2012 09:18 PM

Here is what it looks like at night... you can see it is very washed out... daytime looks fine IMO though.

kenchan 03-01-2012 10:10 PM

yah, but i suppose you can still a silhouette of an obstruction.

can you increase the intensity of the backing white light (tail lamp) to give it a tad more illumination?

cossie1600 03-02-2012 12:57 AM

I did more testing. I want to bring up the camera maybe half a star as the angle is not as bad as I thought. Still don't expect to see anything that is extremely close, huge blind spot if you are within 2 feet of the car on the side

:iagree:

Not sure what blindspot you are referring to. I'll have to see if there is any level adjustments on the head unit but I would assume there isn't since it is just a receiver, not the sender of the signal.

MattP725 03-02-2012 02:24 PM

BTW.. WTF are you trailing with that thing??? Looks incredibly out of place on a Z.

kenchan 03-02-2012 02:48 PM

its in the camera itself. My porch light was on, thats why it was so bright

Gas is 4.50 a gallon, looks are out the window when it cost me 85 to fill up. Plus car has enough power to tow, its not a bad tow vehicle. I wired the camera to be on all the time for towing purposes

LakeShow 03-02-2012 05:37 PM

Tow hitch FTW!!! :bowrofl::roflpuke2:

takjak2 03-03-2012 01:00 PM

/derail
Still jealous of the tow hitch.

cossie1600 03-03-2012 02:10 PM

Nismo=no hitch allowed
