this guy's plate is manually operated, but another guy has a electric motor that does it.

so, anybody gonna try and see if they can make one similar..

Can you imagine a cop's face after he pulls you over, for no front plate, and then walks to the front of the car!:bowrofl:

nogoodname 05-28-2009 05:31 PM

Here's a video of the electric one

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2s1Wrz2MZKk

it's called "Show N' GO" & Altec is the brand.

apparently it comes in a kit, just install it, but i guess you gotta cut a small hole in the grille....

All jokes aside, can a cop arrest me if I pulled that on him?

Anyways, I wish someone would invent adjustable window tints. Soon as I get pulled over, up goes my license plate along with lowering my tint shade. :D

msl82 05-28-2009 08:16 PM

I love this gadget, I am going to buy it!!

GreenJalapeno 05-28-2009 08:18 PM

^ i think they have snowboarding googles that can adjust tint with the touch of a button >.>

nogoodname 05-29-2009 11:58 AM

nah, no scratches from what i heard.

the guy did get pulled over and he flipped the licence plate up...the officer did not give him a ticket...he actually asked where did he get it for his own car...hahahah

ENT-Z 05-29-2009 03:13 PM

Where did you buy this?

spmcpa 05-29-2009 03:30 PM

Moss Motors in Goleta Calif offers them (motorized and manual) for Miatas. Shouldn't be too hard to adapt to a 370Z if an application-specific version is not out there.

Moss Motors, there's a name from the past! Great to see they are still in business as I used them for parts on my MG's, Austin-Healey, and a Triumph I owned.

Motorized or manual would comply with- Bracket and Securely fastened!
I'll look later if it has to be visible 24/7!
Calif.Vech.Code
11713.17. (a) Following the retail sale or lease of a motor vehicle
for which the department issues two license plates, a dealer may not
deliver the motor vehicle unless either of the following occurs:
(1) The motor vehicle is equipped with a bracket or other means of
securing a front license plate.
(2) The dealer obtains a signed written acknowledgment from the
person taking delivery of the motor vehicle acknowledging both of the
following:
(A) The person expressly refused installation of a bracket or
other means of securing the front license plate.
(B) The person understands that California law requires a license
plate to be displayed from and securely fastened to the front of the
motor vehicle and that the hardware necessary to securely fasten the
front plate is available from the dealer.
(b) A manufacturer or distributor may not sell or distribute in
this state a new motor vehicle for which the department issues two
license plates, unless that motor vehicle is equipped or provided
with a bracket or other means of securing the license plates.

GreenJalapeno 05-30-2009 12:43 AM

WAIS Document Retrieval

Alchemy 05-31-2009 08:28 PM

Also check out Stillen's front plate system. It screws into the tow hook. Its PERFECT. Although im gonna save 80 bucks and make one myself.

chrisw169 06-01-2009 11:31 AM

Summit Racing has both the powered and non-powered. They have the power for like 135 I think, but if you google it or actually search for it, you could find a better deal. It is the Altec Show n Go...

ENT-Z 06-01-2009 11:48 AM

Yep got mine from summit racing for 132 i think. Best deal I could find except bidding on ebay. Most places want 159. It should be here tuesday so I will try to get installed and pics/diy up asap.

CBRich 06-01-2009 11:50 AM

Not a bad idea for those states that require the front plate. We await the DIY ENT-Z. Let us know how it goes.

chrisw169 06-01-2009 08:06 PM

Yeah Texas is one of those states, so once I do get my Z this is one mod I do want to get. Definitely let us know how it works out for you.

Adjustable tint is actually a possibility...it would involve using a charged gas between two plates of glass; color would change according to voltage applied. The problem would be getting two plates of glass to fit in the window. Would probably require custom made glass.

nogoodname 06-02-2009 10:42 AM

Glad you fellas like the idea.

I thought it was cool......even though I don't have a front plate.

ENT-Z 06-09-2009 08:28 PM

Did this last weekend. Full review and DIY posted here:

ENT-Z 06-09-2009 08:44 PM

Check the link in the post above. It's all documented in my DIY.

nogoodname 06-09-2009 09:34 PM

Nope - liquid crystal. (eg LCD)

You guys are crazy if you think the NTSB is ever going to allow something like that in a window that could shatter on impact. Generally windows that can darken contain tiny filaments that adjust their alignment via electric current to block out light to varying degrees. I don't think it acts like window tint, however - meaning you wouldn't be able to see out anymore than see in.

In regards to the OT, this would be a cool mod if I finally get fed up with being pulled over for only having my front plate on my dash. 4 months so far and no problems though - it even gave one officer an excuse to hand me a ticket for that instead of speeding. (loss of my license speeding, no less!!)

LCD...

"Its unique LCD-like VALiD™ lens construction permits the tint to change from light to dark in as little as 1/10th of a second when the internal liquid crystals are activated by two included CR2032 batteries that provide up to 200 hours of use."

besides LCD is pretty much what you are describing above - pass a current through it and the crystals re-alignt themselves...

..... and who's to say LCD can't be laminated like a windshield?

Back on topic though..... has anyone tried an R/C servo to stow a plate?

Easier would be a LCD film. Just like self-dimming mirrors.

opps....I should read down all the way before posting. 8-)

I was reading Import Tuner at Barnes and Nobles earlier today (I think it was IT, it was some random car magazine) and I stumbled upon this:

TricPlate.com

This might be handy for some people for their rear license plates. ;) A little bit pricey though.

Shunya 08-12-2009 06:32 AM

i dun get the triplate. so it just covers ur plate?

Yea it's like what others were thinking about for window tinting. You flip a switch and the glass over the license plate goes opaque. A guy I know has one - and he's used it too (Super Speeders) hope I don't get in trouble posting that link :P
