plasti dip color fading

im planning to paint my wheels, door handles and nissan emblem with plasti dip matte black. One of my friend did on his wheels but the color faded to light grey in 3 weeks. Anyone got an idea of preventing this issue?
:)

dont paint it using plasti-dip and use duplicolor wheel paint? :D

halogodx 12-20-2011 10:49 AM

I did all of that , and my plasti dip is still holding up After 6 months. Make sure to spray atleast 3 coats. I did 3 heavy coats and it did the job

well, i think i read juruki mentioning it was a royal pita to remove plasti-dip from the wheels so do it at your own risk.

id just commit and do it right the first time using wheel paint. :)

I want to remove the paint just in case thats why I wanna go with plasti dip. lol
What if I finish with Rustoleum clear coat wheel paint after platidip?

i dont recommend that unless you know exactly wat the composition is on the plasti-dip and the rustoleum paint.

the thing about rustoleum is they're known to have some strong metal/rust eating features to lockout rust. i'd imagine that chemical will eat through the plasti-dip? not sure.

instead, how about using that clear plasti-dip stuff? does that have UV protection? i'd study that first. :)

clearcoat does not necessarily mean it can protect from UV. read the label carefully before you apply.

Could the fade actually be dirty wheels/brake dust?

kenchan 12-20-2011 02:39 PM

ive yet to see gray brake dust...(?)

Clear coat doesn't work well on plasti dip, but that may be partly because I tried it in 100*+ weather. Plasti dip has a new glossifier which might help.

Amen!

Funny - 15 years ago, it was the lower level models of cars that came with the black trim while the premium models came with painted trim.

Maybe sometimes in our efforts to be unique, we really do more harm than good.

Everyone's taste is different, and I truely respect that, but I struggle with painting $35k - $45k cars with Plasti-Dip. Over the 35 years I've owned cars, I've done some things I regretted later, and learned some lessons along the way. The biggest being if you can't do it right, wait until you can or don't do it at all.

You can prep a part and paint it with Duplicolor and it will look like a quality job. I think the only good use for Plasti-Dip would be painting the fangs.

To each his own.

Merry Christmas All!

My Plasti Dip has been on my car since the begining of summer. Absolutely no fading or chipping.

Could the heat from the brakes somehow help fade the plasti-dip on his friends wheels?

b1adesofcha0s 12-20-2011 05:17 PM

The only reason I would use plasti dip is because it is removable. If you paint something or get it painted, it costs twice as much to bring it back to stock.

Dust and dirt on a black surface can make it appear faded or grey... the brake dust itself doesn't have to be grey.
