It would be very wise to use adhesion promoter before painting.

I think even wiser to remove them and have autobody shop professionally paint them and do it only one time. IMO

I work as a body man in a body shop and I had my painters paint allot of stuff on my car but they refused to paint my handles b/c they said there will be a adhesion problem down the road so I just let it ly.

Since I've done mine and they came out good. I kinda worry about the avg joe doing it and just kicking himself cause it came out looking like crap or having to retouch them in the future. The Pro's do know what their doing most of the time. :tiphat:

I know I really wanted them pearl white but since they did 2 toned both bumpers, both rocker covers and some small stuff for free I didn't want to piss them off that's why I let it go.

I am a painter and I shot my handles using PPG envirobase and it is holding up great. Just wet sand with 600 and get the back side of the handle scuffed really well with a red scotch brite. I shot a couple sets of 350z handles back in 05 and they still look great. As long as they are scuffed good and you use adhesion promoter followed by a high quality sealer they will hold up fine.

I know thats what I told them(minus the wet sand) and they still didn't want to.

They may have been just getting lazy.:shakes head:

I had them painted last week on my 370Z roadster. I'll post pics soon. I personally would not do self-painting as I've seen too many cars at shows that are only a few years old and there is some cracking and chipping on self-made spray paint no matter how good of a job you did.

A body very good shop will do the handles for $150.00 if you bring them the handles and they don't have labor to take them apart and install them.

My body shop wet sanded them, primed them, used 3 coats of great quality paint and then clear coat them. They look exactly like factory paint and the paint won't chip.

If it were $500.00 to have them professionally painted I would say go do it yourself but for $150.00 please don't do it if you think you will keep the car longer than 3 years or I promise you will regret it.

Funny how we just spoke of this the other day.

paid $90 for mine, very happy with the results, no fading or chipping so far, color match couldn't have been more spot on.

Thanks for sharing. I had a feeling that it would come out that way. I am going to go for a red/gunmetal theme. Thanks again.

should look really good when you're done! Are you planning on powder coating your wheels gunmetal or buying new ones?

roplusbee 07-26-2011 10:07 AM

Powdercoating the NISMOs. I have been toying around with the idea of purchasing ADV.5s (three piece) or the Volk G12s, but I need to solidify my TT budget and ensure that it is all complete first.

I am also looking to get CF pieces to compliment the Red/Gunmetal theme, but it all depends on timing and such. Afghanistan is a beast......Can't wait to get back home.
