Slight Emergency HELP!! new updated pics
 

So i am installing an ams short shifter, I have installed short shifters before in my other cars and no big deal. i removed the shifter mechanism and I am trying to remove the stock shift knob and it does not seem to want to come off, it is turning but it is almost as if it is just spinnign inside the knob itself rather than unthreading. Anyone ever run in to this and have some idea as to what to do. I realize I may have to cut the knob off somehow but thought I might as well ask first, thanks for the help.

Never run into that exact problem, but for many of us, the stock knob has too much loctite on it, making it almost impossible to remove the knob without damaging it pretty badly.

i used this blue craftsman wrench from sears, 5 bucks
worked like a charm, you just have to keep twisting it, it does feel like its just spinning but just keep turning it

tried that and the knob just keeps spinning. I have been turning it for what seems like 20min. I think its cutting time. Dremel here I come.

I used a strap wrench as well, but it crushed the top of the knob, making it come apart at the seams.

no biggie, tho. I love my new one.

Once the assembly is completely out of the car, wrap the knob with a micro fiber cloth, put it in a vice (not too tight) and you should have the bottom end of the OEM shaft sticking straight up with the loop end at the top. Stick a long piece of metal through it and twist.

Viola! And no damage to the stock knob. This is the exact method I used when B&M was installing mine. (They couldn't get it off either and I came up with this method which worked like a charm).

Edit: If your knob is stripped then obviously this won't work. And you're going to need a lot more leverage than that screwdriver as the metal piece I was talking about...

Thanks for the help guys but wellit was an easy project gone bad. Seems most times the easier the job the more difficult it turns out for me and the harder ones seem easier. After sawing the end of the stock shifter in order to get the necessary pieces of I managed to see that indeed the metal insert that is in the shift knob was in fact turning in the knob itself and would have been impossible to get out. The little black o rings on the ams shifter were also a pita to keep on and the black rubber piece that fits on top of the white shifter cup would not stay on in any way shape or form so i removed it totally, hope it isnt that important. If it is well T.F.B. check out the pic below to see how much fun I had. I also have to go buy a new shift knob now too. Gotta love cars!!!

lol I feel ya, Korrupt. I had a project go terribly wrong that should have been really simple. Replacing my accelerator pedal, I sheared the bolts that hold it in. Then, I got a screw remover kit, and the bits for that snapped off inside the bolts' bodies.

:facepalm:

150 dollar pedal job cost me 600 bux.

Funny how that always happens. I'm sitting here laughing about it now cause well what ya gonna do. The shifter seems to work well without a knob, I can only imagine how good it's gonna feel with one . Any one in Ottawa got a stock shift knob they want to get rid of ? :bowrofl:

Did you clamp onto the shaft and give it clockwise torque while unscrewing the shift knob to prevent the shaft from actually spinning itself?

I actually put the knob in a vise as I saw in the hacks thread. I started to turn the other end and it felt like it was working however I just kept turning and turning and turning and nothing. Unfortunately the metal insert was just spinning in the knob itself. I eventually got it installed but now I have to go get a shift knob in the morning. I figure I will just grab the nismo titanium I looked at a few times.
