What glue for interior vinyl mounting
 

I have a damaged cubby lid so I decided to replace the factory vinyl with Hexis "carbon fiber" vinyl. I'm going to do stitching just like factory (I hope).

My question is, what kind of glue would I use to secure the vinyl to the lid. The factory vinyl had some kind of green glue/contact cement that holds the edges down. There isn't actually any glue on the backside of the visible areas, it just on the hidden edges.

Suggestions?

Does the vinyl have adhesive backing? :confused: I would reinforce the edges using hot glue but not sure if im understanding your project...

I'm taking the vinyl that is on the cubby lid that is damaged and replacing it with CF vinyl. The CF has a "sort of" adhesive on it, but it is the removable kind. I need something to secure the edges that are hidden.
The glue that the factory used seems to be some kind of contact cement because it came up relatively easily. I had to tug firmly, but it wasn't bonded permanently.

Spray-on contact cement?

Some of it is tacky/repositionable for a short while.

I'm kinda looking for brands. I don't mess with glues much, so I'm a glue-newb.

Yah, id use high temp hotglue and do it a section at a time. Im sure there are other glues out there but I don't know im not a joanne fabrics type. :D ...hotglue pretty much works on everything except smooth glass, etc.

Having installed car stereo systems for much of my life the only contact adhesive that I have ever found that lasts a long time and can hold up to the heat is DAP weldwood

Im surprised to find it in 1 gallon. Its usually only in 5gal. The question wasnt whats cheap but what was going to hold. You can get some 3m aerosol spray at homedepot or lowes (id do that before Id ever use hotglue) but it will start to lift afterwhile.

Wow, 5 gal! :D yah, im sure u know wat you're talking about. I don't know glues that well...:ugh2:

Btw with hot glue shouldn't lift.

im really surprised that there isnt any adhesive on the actual backing of the leather to the door. Ive seen some pics of ones that bubbled so I assumed that they were glued. Ive used the black high temp industrial hotglue to hold tweeters in from behind a grill panel before, where Im from though it would get so hot in the car that it would start to release.
If you go the contact adhesive route just be sure to apply it to both sides and allow it to tack up before you put them together.

metz- the hot-temp hotmelts melts at over 190C... it can easily withstand automotive operating environments of -40C to +85C. even the low-temp glue gun materials can be used in -40C to +80C without issue... this is why i use glue guns in some of my interior installs with no issue. ive started relying more and more on 3M VHB type adhesives though..(mounting tape) as it's less of a mess, easier to control, no hotgun to worry about inside or near the car, and can also withstand automotive temps. :)
