Learned alot from the DIY. So, I just finished putting my Nismo TI shift knob on and it was a b!tch. Broke the strap wrench I bought from sear's and got a heavy duty one from home depot. I love the look and feel of the shift knob.

I did mine over the weekend too with a strap wrench and I worked a treat. It was still a b*tch to get off though but no damage to the oem knob.
Also did my gtr start button too. http://img.tapatalk.com/d/12/12/05/javy3esa.jpg edit: i put the rubber grommet under the shift boot too but had to cut some of it off because it wouldnt fit lol.. |

I used the same strategy as most everyone here. Vice grips + heavy duty strap wrench. Stock knob survived. It was a lot more effort than it needed to be but the results were very much worth it. |
what i did was I held the shift knob with a wrench and drifted the car around in circles.

Thanks! I tried to get mine off last week and thought I was going to rip the whole shifter out so stopped after a couple twists. Here i come Sears.

I got the same strap wrench, but for some reason, it doesn't seem to grip the shifter very well and slides off after a few attempts.

Shift knob removal
After giving it some carefull thought I pulled the trigger and installed a z-car shifter. I followed the instructions from what you guys have previously posted : duct taped the shift knob, channel locked the shifter under the boot, used a strap and with a little leverage it came off,,, thanks guys my original knob is intact.

Password:JDM Acetal Copolymer Shift Knob Type II--Installed!
This technique worked perfectly and the Password JDM fits nicely.

This proved to be one of THE most simple, yet irritating removals of all.
My friends and I always joke about having to make a few trips to Home Depot, for anything car related that requires some improvisation. Well, this damn shift knob took me a trip to Sears (strap wrench), and a trip to Ace (pipe wrench). Eventually I gave up on the idea that I wasn't going to demolish the stock shift knob...I mean we hardly ever reuse or sell stock parts such as these, but we ALL feel the need to keep them in mint condition. Well, I gave up when I just wanted to get the damn thing off. The protective towel technique was never going to work in my case, because I needed so much torque to get this damn thing off. The strap wrench was worthless for my application. The pipe wrench worked, but I seriously had to use it to turn the damn knob 7-8 turns before I could use my hands to remove it. I guess Nissan has had problems with these things just falling off all the time or something...lol Anyway, after demolishing the stock knob, I'm ready to finally install my short shifter and new knob. I will post a pic once finished, but I really felt the need to vent... I feel better already :) |
i broke two strap wrenches trying to get the stock one off. :ugh:
i said f-k it and used my larger oil filter wrench. (currently running biggy type-r knob) bought a used mint one from a local member. he told me his came off easy. :ugh: |
Yup, following the DIY, I picked up a strap wrench and thought it would simple. My god, we always talk about demon bolts, well this was a damned demon knob! I didn't break the wrench, but I thought I was going to. I was so happy when I finally got the thing off.

I took mine off simply using a strap wrench. I didn't need the vice grips below the boot. It did take a surprising amount of force.
With out the strap wrench you would need a pretty serious "Kung Fu Grip". |

I'm about to attempt this, I just wondered if anyone has a picture of the underside showing exactly where they clamped the mole grips to?
If you are clamping straight onto a perfectly round metal shaft is the likelihood of it slipping not fairly high? Cheers Dan |
Sorry to bump an old thread, but I didn't want to make a new one for a simple question. I finally got my OEM knob off and installed one from flossy, but now there's a space between the knob and boot, anyone know what I can do to get rid of it?

OEM shift knob removal (SEARCHED)
Kenchan finds the gasket/plumbing/ hardware aisles at home depot very handy. Seriously. GL!

i destroyed my shift knob lol

ballcock shank washer mod...
i just realized i did the "washer mod" on my car unknowingly... :ugh: |
but you still need to make a collar inside the boot regardless to keep the boot up.
i use packing material from wire shelves... and hell i have a ton of those from the wire shelves i made 2yrs ago :ugh2: |
Stock knob is h*ll. I broke two strap wrenches already. Going to give it another go tomorrow. Shift knob still intact for now.

Some people have had the same troubles. Dang. I got nothing. Sorry. |
Try 2 strap wrenches forget the vise grips they slip. Thats how I did mine.
|
I have the stock shifter knob and like it as is. If I were to take the OEM off, I would grab 1 mouse pad and cut it in half. Wrap one around the base and the other piece around the knob. Apply two pipe wrenches and twist. Pipe wrenches can get just about anything loose given you have space to turn them.

I tried a pipe wrench -Raj |
When I say it won't come off I'm serious

You need a bigger wrench and need to grab it closer to where it connect the rod. The other pipe wrench needs to up high closer to the knob. With a big enough wrench and space, it will turn if not bust and tear apart. If it tears apart, it can't be helped as it was put on by Jeebus himself.

yah, mine looked like it was dipped in thread lock when i took it off.
i broke 2 strap wrenches and i was like f- it. used my oil filter wrench and twisted it off. i bought a used one from a local guy (no scratches) who said he had no issue removing his stock knob from his 370z. currently my Z runs twm biggie type-r |

I used strap wrenches on bottom and rotated between vice grips and the pipe wrench to hold the shaft. There are marks on the shaft from the vice grips :( -Raj |

I was thinking about using an oil filter wrench but the thing is is that I don't want to destroy my knob, I am ruining it trying to take the stock one off -Raj |
Stock knob after two broken strap wrenches... I tore the leather after a while and said F it.

I wrapped mine in duct tape many times used a combonation of a strap wrench thing and a pipe wrench.
I think its variable how much loctite they put on. Mine just had a couple of threads around it...thats the part you have to break when your twisting it hard. Once you do its very very simple to remove. If you do remove it well buy another when its time to sell if you can not part with the knob your putting back on. Its not like your not going to sell the thing when the time comes. |

I planned to keep the knob, just taking if off for a short shifter and I was gonna put a Tk knob on. Since it won't come off I'm thinking about canceling the order. -Raj |
