Why is the trunk so shallow?

I've gone through people's pictures of their Z's trunk stripped to bare metal, and wonder why for some reason the trunk floor still appears to be so high up. Add the spare tire, Bose subwoofers, and foam inserts, the trunk becomes very shallow. My old acura integra hatchback was a small car and its trunk was still noticably deeper in comparison.

jaedub 03-19-2011 02:16 AM

I agree, the trunk seems deep but its not. After loading up some groceries I try to close the trunk but the groceries end up getting sandwiched between the base and the trunk lid. I get scared sometimes when closing the trunk lid with something in the back because the trunk is so shallow that the luggage I put in pops right out through the rear windshield as I close the trunk.

It's called rear wheel drive in a sports car....

christian370z 03-19-2011 02:18 AM

You could free up another 12 inches of depth or more if you are willing to run without a spare tire, carpet, jacks, and tools.

i probably would if i was in a dire situation where i had to lug some serious cargo but chances are that its 99.9% not going to happen. i rarely ever have anything in my trunk except a weight lifting belt. as of now, the entirety of the trunk space is taken up by my car cover but that's fine with me. if i need to go on a trip or carry something, i'll just throw the cover in the shed.

i noticed how shallow the trunk was when i tried to fit the oem rear Rays in the trunk laying down and the trunk wouldn't close. i had to put it in the passenger seat and take 2 trips from my mechanic shop when i switched out the winter wheels

christian370z 03-19-2011 02:39 AM

Yeah, the biggest issue with fitting stuff back in the hatch is that the plastic trim that is on the inside of the hatch really intrudes on the amount of depth in the trunk when it is closed.

Jordo! 03-19-2011 05:32 AM

Trunk?

Oh... you mean that space in the back where you put groceries so they can get flung about the car on your way home.

LunaZ 03-19-2011 06:20 AM

I carry an extra gallon of windshield washer fluid back there.
Man, I go through that stuff fast!!!!

spearfish25 03-19-2011 07:18 AM

The RWD requires the rear diff to fit under the car. Slide under there some time and see just how little room there is.

kenchan 03-19-2011 07:45 AM

You guys actually use the rear 'glove box'? :icon17:

HEY! I can fit five 1U servers back there!

TreeSemdyZee 03-19-2011 08:27 AM

Because it was brought up to think only of itself and thinks the World revolves around it.

Oh. You didn't mean that kind of shallow.

Red__Zed 03-19-2011 08:35 AM

I guess it is pretty shallow, but there's actually a pretty decent amount of space back there. You can fit a ton of stuff if yOu pack creatively.

there is a decent amount of space but if i were to pack something with height/depth no creative packing could cure that. Like if i wanted to bring home a cabinet i couldnt.

Open your windows. Especially if you've got cars on, you'll be fine.

They could have free'd up space if there wasn't a spare tire like the Corvette. This would mean crappy run flats or no spare tire at all however.

A fuel cell would look badass...too bad we can't all turn our Z's into racecars.

I still haven't figured out why they made the gas tank so freaking huge

waaaasabi 03-20-2011 12:17 AM

Because race car.

Brazilbro 03-20-2011 12:32 AM

most of that space is used for the keg like stock exhaust, rip that out and you got a sweet spot for a remote turbo system. or Diff cooler
