Windshield Crackling Noise
 

Not long after I got the car, I started noticing a crackling noise from the windshield when I have to drive the car on/off a driveway/gas station ramp at an angle. I talked to a guy at the service department at a dealership and he said it's because the windshield bends as the car body flexes as I drive through bumps or ramps.

My question is, is this normal? I've never experienced anything like this out of all the cars I've driven(hundreds of them..). I kinda put this off my mind since it's not a constant noise. However, as I pulled into my driveway today as I usually do, I actually heard crackling noise from the body of the car.

Should I be concerned about the rigidity of the car and if there is any fix for this? The car handles well so I don't think it's on the verse of falling apart. But it's just really annoying to hear these noises that should not exist in a 30k car with less than 8k miles!

i think there was a guy that had stress fracture on the winsheild.

if your'e hearing noise it might be a good sign that the glass has some room to move instead of cracking. stress fractures are covered under warranty so keep an eye on it. warmer weather might help too.

What do I do to correct this? What is a searchchid? This is new to me, I never had link trouble before.

You can just mention the search terms, I don't think there is an easier way.

Hi Guys, think I've found a solution to the problem. I started to develop the same noise in my z. First was time I noticed was up/down steep driveways at around 5000km and then more recently the noise started appearing on bumpy roads at around 10000km. If you look at the base of the windscreen whilst outside the car you'll notice a plastic strip running across its base. This plastic strip catches dust and grit underneath, and over time (if not cleaned), the grit will manifest itself as a creaking sounds in the cabin. Try pressing along that plastic strip you'll most likely hear the sounds you've been hearing inside the car.

If you run a high pressure hose along the base of the windscreen, focusing on getting the water under the plastic strip, you will clear any grit/dust from between the strip and windscreen. The end result is no more creaks. Enjoy :)

I think your spot on, I found the same thing with mine.

Bit of a necropost, but I wanted to say how effective the above solution is. I slid a credit card between the plastic strip and the glass to remove the dirt and small pieces of grit. Creaky noise gone.

i tried a gerni and it still wouldnt shift the crap built up under the cowl covers. so i took the drastic effort of removing the cowl covers to investigate. this requires removal of the wiper arms and also the strut brace so it's not a quick task.

cleaned up all the crud built up (leaf matter, dirt, sand, etc) and scraped it all off. I put a 10mm wide strip of self adhesive neoprene along the edge of the windscreen as a decoupler to prevent 2 hard surfaces hitting each other. noise has been gone since i did this :)
clark rubber had the neoprene but it was quite thick so replacing the cowl covers took a lot of effort.

My G37s had this problem every time I hit bumps, and there was a DIY on myG37.com on how to prevent this....it was the passenger side had no adhesive to prevent the cowl from staying put, so the G37 guys took it apart and applied their own and the problem went away
