Seeing out the back

Hey guys, so I'm looking to pickup a Z in the next few months, but am really nervous about being ablento see out the back. I stopped by the car show this weekend and sat in the car three different times and couldn't seem to get past the fact that when looking in the rear view mirror, it's a very limited view. I love the design of the Z, but this fact alone is pushing me towards the g37. I feel like the 350z was the same way, but have yet to actually drive the 370z. Do u just get used to it?

VaGntlmn 11-14-2010 05:52 PM

I've had my Z for about 4 months now.
Out the back in the rearview mirror does not bother me at all.
Now, backing out of a parking space, and a little bit of a blindspot in the back right, do.
But you learn to live with it.

NCSUPACK09 11-14-2010 05:52 PM

If you set the mirrors right, you will have absolutely no problems seeing out the back window and your blind spots. You should not go with the G37 because of this...

Compared to like a sedan or something, sure it seems hard to see out the back. But as someone who has had an assload of sports cars, it's not much different than any of the rest.

chuckd05 11-14-2010 06:17 PM

the only thing that still bothers me is making a 45 degree left...

Example = K if I was coming down the top crooked line of the K and busted a left towards the bottom straight... wouldnt see a lick of anything without serious head movements leaning foward or just flooring it and merging lol jk..

thats the only true annoyance of driving this car and dealing with blind spots... Many people do not setup there mirrors right, I taught several people how I set them up and all of them had theres completely wrong. Sort of overlooked is how to properly set up your side and rear view mirrors.

awesome, thanks a lot for the input.. it's the car i really wnat, I was just having a tough time getting past that. I am reassured, thanks

Got my Z a few weeks back. Adjusted the mirrors properly (which in my case was as far "out" as they go), and not at all fearing the blindspots that were such a concern to me also before I actually had the car.

Now, perhaps they are there and since you can't see what you can't see, I may eat these words some day, but I hope not! :icon14:

On the left I am using the "lean forward and look back" method just to be sure.

On the right the "porthole" is actually useful as long as the passenger seat is not all the way back. Not sure I'd see a motorcycle or a Smart Car if it was exactly between the rear and right side mirror fields, but seeing normal-sized vehicles ok I think.

Not sure it's the vehicle I'd pick to weave in and out of Manhattan traffic every day, but for most situations I wouldn't let the "blindspots" keep me from buying this car. :driving:

Use the Mirrors, and backup slowly.

I just drive with the hatch open, 100% rear visibility!!

Wait, so the main reason why you would buy one car over another is rear view mirror viability....yeaaaa right good luck.

Check out this thread for the proper solution.....

I want a Z 11-15-2010 09:13 AM

2011's have rear view camera option

kenchan 11-15-2010 10:44 AM

definitely get a rearview camera. :) clear view of short things (like barricade posts/stops) you wont see through your rear glass or your side mirrors.

I'm not sure why that would be such a surprise to you? I like everything else about the car except the fact that seeing out the back is extremely limited. I had better visibility out the back of my s2000 with the soft top. To me, the Z has such a flat lined roof, that the visibility is very limited. Like a lot of people on the forum, who are car enthusiasts, I've driven a lot of cars, german, domestic, imports, porsches etc, and I think the Z has the smallest visibility out the back. I'm not concerned about seeing out of the blindspots, I think that comes with the territory of buying a sports car. However, I was concerned about seeing directly out of the back, especially knowing that there are heavy blindspots out of the sides. Yea the G37 is a lot different than the Z, but there are obviously a lot of similarities, and rear visibility is not an issue in the G. I just like the Z a lot more (design wise) than the G, so I wanted to get some owners' perspective. Not sure why that causes you so much stress?

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this, but the 370z does come in a convertible. Problem Solved.

Ty Weezy 11-15-2010 02:14 PM

Just takes some time to get used to. I have the nismo so visibility is even worse than the standard z but after a few days of driving you get used to it. Like others said just make sure u take ur time when backing up and maybe get a rear view camera if you are still having trouble.

kenchan 11-15-2010 02:17 PM

all is well until it's a rainy night and you have to back out of a tight parking spot. just invest in the rearview camera. it's worth every penny on the z. :)

I have to transition from my DD car, a honda fit, to my weekend warrior car, the Niz.

Talk about adjustment.

But well worth it.

wolf370z 11-16-2010 08:14 AM

I've daily driven my 370z for about a year now and honestly I don't have any issues. At first the rear view does seem very limited but after about 2 weeks of driving you won't have any problems. Also, if you get the Z, make sure you take the time to adjust your mirrors to eliminate 99% of your blindspots and you will be fine. Honestly the cars a dream to drive daily even with a manual.... the car certainly slides in and out of parking spots easy.

Mandingo 11-16-2010 10:53 AM

I haven't had any real issue backing up after only having the car for a few weeks. It seems like the dimensions of the 370 are easy to learn. Plus I just rev it a few times when coming out of a parking place to warn people hehe.
I have to admit though, it would be cool to have the little back-up monitor inside the rear-view mirror like in the 2011s: 2011 370z options

i agree..... try looking out the nismos rear window!

370zsport09 11-16-2010 12:20 PM

I try not to park next to full size pick-ups or those with long beds....kinda gotta creep when backin' out :P ....... but overall if you just are aware of your surroundings and use your mirrors you shouldn't really have any problems drivin a Z....other options: BACK-UP CAMERA, Always Back into parking spots, tell your passenger to get out and STOP Traffik???? NO Passenger, No Problem....just keep 2 TRAFFIK Cones in the Hatch ;) Place cones to left and right of area needing coverage :P

awesome, thanks for the responses

First thing I noticed was the poor visibility, was never too fond of the 350z so I never bothered getting in one, but the 370Z is so beautiful, I didnt let the visibility stop me from buying one, I do have to lean forward and look left when veering left on the highway, I also learned that parking in reverse in way better, and if I have to park forward I creep out extremely slow, My fiance bought me a rearview cam for the 370Z for xmas, she wont let me install till xmas :( I told her that its probably a good idea to get one, found out today that little square on the rear bumper pops right off and the styrofoam inside is cylinder shaped perfect for a rearview cam. Minor sacrifices made for a beautiful car IMHO:tiphat:
