About to go on a painting spreeeeeee

So Ive had my car for alomst a month now and i cant take it being "stock" looking. so i want to paint the front fangs, rear valance, and the spoiler black. now i dont have money to start throwing at a body shop to do it.

Ive only used a spray gun like twice and was only fooling around with it. Now how do you guys feel about rattlecan paint? good idea? Bad idea??

kenchan 08-26-2010 09:06 AM

if done correctly they can look very nice. especially matte paints are easy to do, just keep a good 8-12 inches when you spray.

gloss is a bit harder as you need a wet coat at the end and requires polishing afterwards.

The Jewbag™ 08-26-2010 09:40 AM

Everyone on the euro scene uses Plasti-dip. People on myg37.com are starting to get into it as well. If you're painting it matte black I highly recommend you using this, because if there is any error you can literally just peel it right off. Google Plasti-dip.

ClemsonWill 08-26-2010 01:11 PM

In my opinion this is awful risky. Once you mess up the stock paint it can be very expensive to get it fixed the right way.

looked into this stuff. and it seems pretty cool. Def going to try it on MY SISTERS CAR haha. she has a 2000 saturn. ill paint a huge line across the front and tell her it comes off lol

on a serious note i think im going to give it a shot. seems like a cool idea.

I know. i know i have a steady hand but one mess up and thats it. My buddy brought up a good point. if i do mess it up ill just bring it to a body shop and have them fix it. i know a couple kids that paint but i hate asking favors. and if it comes out bad you have to yell at your friend lol. hopefully this plasti-dip will work out.

Cmike2780 08-26-2010 01:52 PM

In all honesty, it will cost you more to have to fix something than doing it right the first time. The rear valance and front fangs are less of a risk since you could always buy an overlay to cover up your mistake, but I would have to say no go on painting the wing. You'll see your mistake in direct sunlight and that area sees a lot of traffic from closing the trunk. Even done by pro, rattle can's don't come close to a spray gun finish. I think a body shop would have to strip "your mistakes" off before they can apply new paint. I would leave the wing alone.

The Jewbag™ 08-26-2010 02:20 PM

I played around with Plasti-Dip and the fact that you can f@ck up and basically just peel it off is really appealing to me because I am not the best painter. I missed that day in kindergarden.

Yea thats true. i thought the black spoiler looked pretty cool. i didnt plan on painting that for a while if i did it. if the plasti-dip really works how they say it does and you can just peal it off im def gona try it. ill have nothing to lose lol

Plasti-dip

So i decided to try the plasti-dip stuff and let me tell you it works awesomee. first i tried 3 coats on a plastic bucket and let it sit for a half hour and it peeled off with a bit of picking at it. and it was only two coats. so then after dinner last night i got to taping off my car and tried the rear valance. came out awesome. I did like 7-8 extremly thin coats and it looks great. only thing is that since its a little rubbery the paint sticks to the car and the tape so i got some rough edges in some places, so i need to find a way to get rid of that. but other than that it worked and looks great. heres some pics.

Bucket

here is an idea of the texture.

heres the finished product.

I give plasti-dip :tup::tup:

Cmike2780 08-27-2010 08:08 AM

Looks good. Use an xacto knife around the edges before you peel the tape off. Just enough to score the plasti dip. Don't use too much pressure or you will scratch the paint underneath.

I actually did that but idk how hard i have to push to get through it. now if it was vinyl id be able to do it perfect lol.(family has been in the sign buisness since the 60's lol). it looks ok for now. ill give it another shot sooner or later.. i think im going to try the fangs today. i also think i might try the wing sometime this weekend to so how it looks and if its ugly ill peel it off :happydance: lol

This stuff is great to see how stuff would look. because if it looks bad u can peel it right off. this is a bad thing for me bc i like to experiment and knowing that it will come right off.... my cars in trouble haha

ClemsonWill 08-27-2010 09:26 AM

It looks like it came out pretty good. Let us know how it holds up.

Joka4411 08-31-2010 10:04 PM

looks nice, But Iam too scared to try it, call me chicken.

christian370z 08-31-2010 10:28 PM

That looks perfect, almost exactly like I would like it to look on my car. I am debating on going with vinyl or using plasti-dip but my end goal is to have the fang and rear valence looking like yours.

Trips 08-31-2010 10:57 PM

Looks Good!!

fuct 09-01-2010 09:37 AM

why in the world would you want a flat black spoiler??? just looks like you bought it and couldnt afford to paint it and just slapped it on ala "rice civic" style.

Thanks:tiphat:

Vinyl wont work. Ive been doing vinyl signs for about 13 years and to get that to work would be the biggest pita in the world. the plati-dip has a cool little texture to it. i personlly like it, others may disagree

thats what so cool about this stuff. it actually peels off. I plan on taking it off in the next month or so and redoing it.

i saw it on a test car for something and thought it looked cool. worst comes to worse. i paint it, dont like it and then just peel the paint off.

just the bucket. but i did get some overspray on the bumper from a spot i didnt tape good enough and it actually just rubber off with my finger. left some residue but came off with soapy water.

wilsonp 09-01-2010 06:10 PM

What do you think about the door handles?

Haven't tried the Di-Noc yet, but this looks like it would go on easier anyway :)

Still trying to avoid taking the handles off :)

RCZ 09-02-2010 09:16 AM

I think I'm gonna give this stuff a shot too. Do they only sell it online or can I get it at home depot?

Idk about the door handles. it has a bit of texture to it and idk how that would look/feel on the handles.

Finally found and issue. DO NOT WASH PLASTI-DIP WITH A MITT. lol washed the car a couple days ago with my green mitt and now i have will green things all over the rear valance. cant find a way to get it off yet. will post a solution when i find one

kenchan 09-09-2010 01:06 PM

ouch... sucks is you can't really use WD40 cause it will probaby melt it off... (?) not sure, might be worth a try. :D

wh1te370z 07-20-2011 07:27 AM

Bring it back!!! Ok update on this whole plati dip stuff. After almost a year of it being on the front of the car i decided to try and peel it off to make sure that it actually DOES come off. and to my surprise it came off pretty easy for the most part. anywhere where i sparyed really light was a bit of a pia but it all came off and left nothing behind.

 Plasti Dip

happytheman 08-07-2011 10:29 PM

Wow! Thanks for the update! I was wondering how it would hold up over time, and how easily it would come off. Any chips or premature peeling?

Great news! I'm going to paint my rear valence this week as well as black out my emblems. Did you ever paint your spoiler?

I had no peeling issues. I think i said it berfore in the thread but i tried to clean some stuff off with wd40 and that messed up a little section. It did chip a little but i think it held up better than paint bc its softer.

i never got around to doing it. if you search around you can see some people that did it.

My_third_Z 08-08-2011 03:08 PM

What made you want to peel it off? I'm heading to Home Depot tomorrow!

wh1te370z 08-09-2011 07:29 AM

i wanted to make sure it actually did peel off. So it was all curiosity haha. never had a problem with it. i plan on re-spraying the front as soon as i have time.
