radar detector

Hello,
I am wondering if anyone is using a raday detector right now.
does radar detector really works?
I am thinking to get one, but I am not sure that is really gonna work.
any comments please.
thanks

I don't think it's worth going to prison for...

Edit:

Saw this on the webz:

Radar detectors are legal in all US states, except Virginia and Washington DC. They are illegal in all Canadian provinces, except Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan. In the UK radar and laser detectors are still legal (December 2005), but will soon be outlawed in the new Road Safety Bill. In all other European countries they are illegal.
Lucky bastards ...

I live in Virginia.
Booyah!

Zigen5 05-24-2010 07:32 AM

Florida.... Yes they do work! Get the Escort Passport, you can't with them.

Prison? LOL, that's why they call it Liberty! Then again, some of you get to drive a lot faster than we do, so maybe I'm not as free as I thought. :icon14:

Yes they do help. I have the passport 9500ix. It is great because of the redlight cameras and the gps filter which filters out the false alarms.

ltp 05-24-2010 10:07 AM

i have passport 9500ix. It is great for red light camera warnings and keeping track/removing false radar/laser signals especialy in the cities.
However, the Valentine One is doing a better job on dectecting radar and laser signals at greater distance too since it has double sensors but it does not have the red light warning system. For me, I would get the Valentine One since I don't speed in the cities but only on interstate highways/freeways. Out there, there is no red light cameras only cops with radar/laser guns. I need a system that can detect at greater distance.

kenchan 05-24-2010 10:18 AM

they also work to identify infiniti's and other higher end cars with cruise with laser as well... :icon14:

GeeBird 05-24-2010 02:10 PM

Yes, they work. I have, and love, a Valentine One. It is hard wired so it powers on and off with the ignition and leaves no power cord in my view.

If you're in the market at least give the V1 a glance: Valentine One radar and laser detectors

man, I wish they didnt cost $400, I can think of so many more mods I can do with that...

N8GTOL 05-24-2010 04:56 PM

Think about the money you can put toward mods when you're not paying off speeding tickets and higher insurance premiums ;)

Yes they do work! Buy the Passport Escort or Valentine 1. Don't waste your money on those radioshack or RCA radar detectors.

As for VA, I wouldn't F*ck around. The second we drove into Virginia last year and this is what we saw :ugh:

We turned our radar off right away.

I do not speed in the cities either but highways/freeways, so V1 is the way to go?

Knives 05-24-2010 07:37 PM

Damn, Virginia does not mess around.

white92 05-24-2010 07:53 PM

OP - If you want another/different perspective before you spend the money PM me.

Zigen5 05-24-2010 07:57 PM

You just can't get caught with them in those 2 states. We have those signs around here in Florida... But you never see any planes fly around.

Osiris 05-25-2010 01:42 PM

Was lookin at Passport's site and it appears the 9500ci (the "installed" version) has ability to scan backwards as well with the available rear receiver. I also see they have a "Redline" model (windshield version) which appears to be top of line for the windshields? Can anyone comment on that?

Pushing_Tin 05-27-2010 02:48 AM

I also have the Passport 9500ix, LOVE it. Back in the mid 90's I got a speeding ticket in New Mexico on my Honda CBR600. It was done by aircraft and I was clocked at 125 is a 55 or 65 I can't remember now. I was in the military then so they didn't arrest me, but I got a hefty ticket and a court appearance!

Jesse_Hunter 05-27-2010 02:55 AM

I have a passport 9500ix, and I'm pretty sure they are legal in Texas.

Wyoming and Colorado are also states that use Aircraft radar. It is very real, I've known people who have gotten tickets this way. They'll scan, dispatch and find you.

allenhhp 05-27-2010 04:57 AM

guys,
should I get v1 or 9500ix?
which is better for highway use in california?

kenchan 05-27-2010 10:03 AM

V1 by far.

ltp 05-27-2010 10:11 AM

For Highways, get Valentine One.

I have both the Valentine One & 9500ix. V1 detects signals better and at greater distance.

9500ix is good inside the cities for memorizing false signals and warning red light cameras but it does not dectect radar/laser signals as well as V1.

If there are speed cameras the 9500, if not the V1. If you do a lot of city driving the 9500 by far is the better choice, unless you like false alarms every 2 minutes.

Ztoon 05-27-2010 01:14 PM

I use the cordless Escort S2 with the Blendmount bracket. Has covered my butt many times, detects 360 degrees as well.

allenhhp 05-28-2010 04:09 AM

thanks, guys
I think I am gonna go with v1 as it is better for highway use.
Any one have a price?
where can I get a good deal for it、

dalparadise 05-28-2010 05:07 AM

V1 are only "better" for highway use when used properly. For me, I became desensitized to the constant falsing of my V1 some years ago. I switched to a Passport 8500 (not even the one with the GPS anti-falsing memory) and never looked back. I now have an 8500 X50 that I've had for several years and will run until it explodes and causes me to buy a 9500 or 10500 or whatever.

When the Passport signals a K or Ka alert, you can be certain there is radar in the area. I always have plenty of time to slow down (even from 90+ mph) It has saved me many times. The key for me is the sensitivity. By not falsing all the time like a V1, the Passport is more trustworthy and outperforms it, even with a slightly shorter (just a few seconds at speed) alert time.

In either case, it's not a "set it and forget it" deal. You have to actively use a radar detector and develop techniques for defensive speeding. Your situational awareness must be sharp. You must familiarize yourself with your detector's quirks. You need to stay alert for speed traps and learn to recognize them by sight and other drivers' reactions ahead of you. The detector is just one part of the puzzle.

The driver is the most important feature of a radar detector.

PS -- I have had two Passport 8500s (current is an X50) over the past 10 years and have only gotten one ticket in that time -- when my old 8500 was broken. I ordered the X50 that same day. I regularly exceed the speed limit by at least 15-20mph and drive approximately 16,000 miles per year. Needless to say, the Passport is a great product.

xiven 05-28-2010 07:29 AM

Escort Passport + Trapster app = really good combination...especially for road trips. Even with that I still wouldn't be going 90+ everywhere. Cops don't even need radar to tell that you are definitely speeding going those speeds.

allenhhp 06-02-2010 06:37 AM

after reading all your respoonses(thanks a lot) I decided to go with V1
I was trying to decide between 9500ix and V1, as I will need a radar detector for highway use only I finally ordered a V1 today
I will post some pics and reviews(hopefully) as soon as I got it.
again, thanks to you all.

pompey 06-02-2010 10:48 AM

the only place ive been to that it is illegal to have a radar detector is west virgina, virgina and washington DC.
if you get one get the valentine 1.

Turn K-Band detection off and you won't "see" those cars anymore. ;-) I have yet to see a copper using K-band.

Come to Texas, more cops are using K now along side laser, instead of Ka.
Plus side is they run around with K on all the time so I pick them up from a mile away.

Yeah, I still leave it on for that "just in case" scenario. ;-)
