Shadowed Tail lights Question

Hey everyone, I was just curious as to what is the best way to Shadow my tail lights? As in what materials are used? I looked for a DIY on this, maybe I just overlooked it.

Also, I was thinking about shadowing just the red section pretty dark only leaving the reverse lights exposed. I photoshopped the idea onto a picture of my car. I haven't decided yet, Has anyone done their tail lights this way?

I'm getting mine done with a mix of black paint and clear coat. At least that's what the guy told me. I've seen his work before, and it looks really good.

Jesse_Hunter 05-16-2010 03:59 PM

Ok so you're saying paint it black, then a clear coat for protection?

No, from what I understand the painter mixes it and sprays it on. It looks good. I wish I had pics, but he's got my lights right now.

This guy got the same thing done to his lights.

The painter I know is a professional autobody painter and does a lot of custom work on rods and rebuilds.

Ok, I will try to find someone like that in my area, Thanks!

Also I found this DYI, not sure how good it would turn out though. HOW TO: Black out your tail lights - Zr2USA.com

I had a local business do my tails and they sprayed them black with clear coat and they came out outstanding!

Those do look really good! So probably I just need to find a good paint and body shop?

I would ask around and see if anyone has done it before. If you find a guy in a shop that has done several, ask to see samples or pics.

I have tint coming from bluebatmobile that's going to tint only the red but leave the reverse lights clear, I'll be sure to post how it goes. If it does not go smooth this time I'm just gonna have them painted.

Jesse_Hunter 05-16-2010 09:45 PM

This is kind of sloppy, but I just threw it together quickly. Wanted to see what it would look like on my Z and I must say, I think it'll be sweet as hell!

I agree with that. I used Vht nightshades with my previous cars, and for me it works great.

Jesse_Hunter 05-16-2010 10:01 PM

Oooh, I checked out the nightshade. It's tempting to buy that and have my friend(mechanic) help me do it myself. The only problem is when it comes time to tape off the reverse section, it kind of bulges up, seems like it might be a real pain in the *** to get it perfect.

I'll check with a shop first, but if it's going to be ridiculous as far as price, I'll do it myself!

bullitt5897 05-16-2010 10:09 PM

Check out my albums. I'm not bragging but I probably have the nicest tint job for a 370z!

Taping off the clear part of the lens is pretty easy using pinstripe tape then painters tape. I have a few pics in my journal.

Oooo, can't wait to do mine like this! great job! I'll prob use your tutorial and do them myself. I'll have the dealership take off my 3rd light before hand. Also while I have them off I'll do the bulb mod.

Is the 3rd light easy to put back on myself? Also, You can still see your lights really well for two coats, I may try to get away with applying 3.

Thanks for the info! :happydance:

schrute 05-17-2010 03:51 PM

Yeah the 3rd brake light is a lot easier to reinstall than to remove. You will need to plan ahead and have a new gasket ready (purchase from your dealer or one of the sponsor dealers here, I think I paid something less than $30).

Good luck! Post pics!

Jesse_Hunter 05-17-2010 04:00 PM

ok I'll look into it, thanks! Pics coming as soon as I finish it. Paint, clear coat, and bulbs are ordered!
