Gauging interest on new hood

DISCLAIMER: This thread is for serious track enthusiasts and ballers!

For you serious, hardcore track guys who are either building their cars into dedicated track only Z's or are dedicating themselves to serious track use with their Z I am in the process of developing very lightweight and functional products for you.

One of the products that we're looking at is a dry carbon fiber hood that would weigh in around 8 or 9 pounds. It would require the use of hood pins (as any race CF part should) and it might not be pretty but it will be incredibly functional and extremely lightweight as well as very strong and can withstand very high speed.

The hood we would build is exactly the same as the hood on our GT R race car in that it is extremely durable and lightweight. However, it does require hood pins and has no underskin.

Here's the kicker:

This hood will cost around $1,800.00 or so. It is REAL dry carbon fiber and will only weigh about 8-9 pounds, it will not need to be painted, and will work extremely well, but it's not the cheapest hood.

Let me know if you're interested!

Thanks!

yay! first one

well to be honest if I was to get a new hood, then I would have liked a SC that was on the top of the engine.

JB-370z 03-04-2010 04:43 PM

I thought they were free with purchase of sc kit? :)

jmlenz 03-04-2010 07:01 PM

will there be vents in the hood?

Kyle@STILLEN 03-04-2010 07:10 PM

Sorry, I can't believe I forgot to mention that the entire design of this hood will be to reduce under hood temperatures. There will be vents in the hood.

I'm not sure how we'd design it just yet. There are two concepts right now that we're kicking around. One would have two vents in the rear corners which would work to get heat out of the very rear most area of the car.

The other option that we would be looking at would have one large vent in the front which helps pull hot air off of the radiator and also increases downforce on the front end. My only concern with this option is the limited space in the front of the engine bay...I'm not sure that we could have a large enough opening for this design to be optimal.

I might be interested, but farther down the road

stiso 03-04-2010 07:14 PM

can it be painted?, and will it accommodate your soon to be released SC? if so I'll order it!

Kyle@STILLEN 03-04-2010 07:22 PM

It could absolutely be painted or left raw, whatever you choose.

The goal would definitely be to make sure that there was plenty of clearance for the supercharger kit.

All for it.

I like the cowl near the front idea better. For heat out back maybe you should do fenders with vents too :p.

Definitely a fan of pre-preg carbon fiber done in an autoclave. Glad you are looking at that route instead of the wet lay resin. I'd love to see the vent designs like you did with the fascia first. It's gotta look cool too!

By the way one thing I loved about my TRD hood on my Supra was the under panels you could bolt on in case it rained. For that price range I think details like that should be covered. I don't think I've ever seen any aftermarket hood (other than TRD) that does that and I could never understand why. It's such a good idea.

yah, maybe on a poster or some diecast or something. not for my real z.

Zerafian 03-05-2010 12:09 AM

sh*t, it wouldnt matter to me. If it looked good I'd buy even if my Z was just a DD and not a track car.

Rickey89 03-05-2010 01:14 PM

I'd be interested if it's similiar to the 350z that would be nice IMO

long as its lighter...
