Steering Wheel Spacer
 

Since the 370z does not have a telescoping steering wheel, I always found myself in a less than ideal seating position.

I found some old threads, but the issue was unresolved.

I recently came across this and was wondering if anyone has experience with it. Seems pricey for what it is, but it could potentially help us folks with T-rex arms.

Bumping this up because I'm wondering about the same product. Was debating this or go aftermarket wheel with the gktech control mount.

Seems terribly expensive. And the eBay ad doesn't give me a warm fuzzy feeling either.

Sub'd for more info but I'm hoping the telescoping steering wheel on the new Z is plug and play with the 370Z.

Stock position sucks for taller folks

Take the opportunity to get a Works Bell Hub and Quick release

They have spacers of varying thickness and the appropriate screw

Combine with a concave steering wheel to being it even closer

I ended up purchasing this due to not wanting to remove the steering wheel (SC drivers are preeeeety turrble) and really loving my ricer LED steering wheel :rofl2:

Anyway, I ordered it April 6th and received it today (13th) via DHL so a week from order to reception coming from Italy. The product itself is nice and solid, and brings the steering wheel approximately 2.5" closer to the driver which is a much needed change in hand/arm position. Unfortunately, the company neglected to include the extension harness for the airbag so I was unable to complete the install and am currently awaiting a response on how they plan to remedy the situation; a bit disappointed in that part (especially considering the cost of the item) but things happen.

I'll update this thread with install pictures when I receive the harness (or send the part back because they didn't).

I look forward to hearing if there's a resolution to the airbag harness length issue... I'm ready to pull the trigger other than that.

A concave wheel looks good and also brings it closer to you

I made a mistake... I said "extension harness for the airbag" I meant the harness for the radio/cruise controls on the steering wheel; the yellow/orange connections that activate the airbag are long enough and reach fine...

However, the company said they don't provide them for the 370Z... so unless I can find a male/female set to make my own extension, I'm just going to return it.

The steering controls harness looks fairly long in this teardown, but I can see how it could be tight after adding 2.5" and considering that you need room to actually fit your fingers in there to plug it in. https://youtu.be/CGjLhYY2Q_Q?t=279

Still, the fact that it's "only" steering wheel controls gives me some confidence. I wouldn't mind splicing some extensions on a radio wiring harness, but much less likely to muck around with air bag circuitry.

How difficult is it to re-pin the existing male/female control harnesses with longer wires? Is there a tool for it?

As much as I love the look, as I mentioned previously: I didn't want to lose my airbag and I like the steering wheel I currently have.

Pretty much what I'm considering... A friend of mine has some extra Deutsche DTM 8-pin male/female connector sets so an option is to just splice and solder the control cables and use the connectors in the middle. Regarding the length of the harness: each side is a different length, so while one side can reach, the other cannot and they merge near the connector.

From the connector to the steering wheel controls, I haven't unwrapped the wiring so I'm not sure how it looks on the control end. The matching male connector (from the airbag side) goes to the clock spring so there would be no point in I'm not messing with that side since, from what I can tell, they don't sell the female side separately from the clock spring.

NorthStyle, did you get a chance to work out a solution to the steering wheel controls?

Yes, I actually extended the harness with the Deatsch DTM harness as planned. I've been studying for an AWS certification so I kinda forgot about updating this.

The spacer is approximately 2.5-3" closer and creates a MUCH nicer driving position. Obviously, it's a bit expensive so it won't be for everyone and there's also the alternative like OptionZero presented with the NRG/Works Bell hubs/spacer and deep corn wheels like the Nardi. However, as I mentioned, I wanted to keep the airbag and this works perfectly for what I wanted.

Is this basically just cutting the existing harness, and soldering it to the DTM harness on both ends to get the extra length? Hope my questions make sense, my electrical experience is less than average.
