Front End Chin Spolier: Why am I seeing two Different Ones?

I purchased my Z with the Touring package and the aerodynamics package. Therefore it should come with the front end chin spoiler. Although I have a black piece of plastic hanging from the front bumper, it looks different then a lot of the pics posted on the various boards on this site. I went by my local Nissan dealership today and looked at a few Zs on the lot and noticed all of them had the same thing my Z has, even the base models WITHOUT the sports or aerodynamic package.

What's the deal with this? Anyone have any info on this?

theDreamer 01-19-2010 07:50 PM

Does your Z have the thing under the fangs, not where the arrow is?

Spartan 1771 01-19-2010 08:22 PM

No, none of the Zs at the local dealerships have it, regardless of what package they have. I have a straight piece of plastic set back a little further across the entire front end, like every other Z at the local places. I paid for the Aero kit, so now what do I do? Argue my point to the dealership three months later?

import111 01-19-2010 08:27 PM

I would tell them I want the front chin spoiler I paid for with the aero package. Mine was in the trunk when I bought my car. Dealer had to install it after I bought the car.

Well I'll make a call tomorrow, but I don't foresee it going well. Thanks for the help. I appreciate it.

i dont like the chin spoiler, it keeps scratching and i subconsciously think the bumper made contact with the asphalt and my car isn't dropped yet

1slow370 01-20-2010 06:45 AM

it's there to tell you that if u ever bought a new front end every time you hear that scrape is a trip to the bodyshop as almost all the new front ends hang lower than the chin spoiler.

Spartan 1771 01-20-2010 08:39 PM

All last night I was fuming about this issue. I actually woke up several times during the night with it on my mind. I was running the conversation I planned to have with the General Manager over and over in my head, preparing myself for the inevitable argument that would ensue.

So today I called and left a brief message for the manager around 10am. I didn’t hear back, which was expected. I left another message at 11am. Still no response. At 3pm I managed to get through to him. I was calm and explained the entire situation to him and he responded by saying “Rob, believe it or not, your not the first person to have this issue”. He then proceeded to tell me a number of customers had the very same problem over the past few months. For unknown reasons to him, the factory seems to have problems properly installing this item. He told me he would order the part ASAP and would call me when it came in. He said when I show up they will take pics of the car without it, and then install it. They need the pics to send to the factory to prove it was never installed in the first place. He also stated it will be completely covered under my factory warranty. He then apologized several times and offered me a free oil change as well as a detail job when I bring the car in for the chin spoiler.

Needless to say, I was SHOCKED!

theDreamer 01-20-2010 08:42 PM

I thought the front chin spoiler was installed state side? Port or dealership, not sure which, hence why many came in peoples hatch area.

Spartan 1771 01-20-2010 08:44 PM

well he said the factory. Maybe he was just using that as a generic term for whoever shipped the car to him? From the way he was talking, it sounded like he was supposed to receive the car with it installed.

kevr6 01-20-2010 09:05 PM

The same thing happened to me and I had to bring it back to get them to install it.

Mine was in my hatch area as well (base+sports pack here). Though, it's been staying in the attic since day 1. I didn't install it thanks to North East Roads

Good luck with the whole thing OP.

NYBladeZ 01-20-2010 09:26 PM

I had it installed but I've scrapped it a few times, now I have a cf piece, it pains me to leave it on there but what good would that do, it's going to scrape eventually when I put it on so hell with it

Your dealer is an idiot. That part is installed at the DEALERSHIP as part of prepping the car for sale. As AK and Dreamer mentioned, it was in the hatch, wrapped in plastic with install instruction. You paid for it, it's part of the car. Your dealer needs to take care of this (and get his act together in the prep department).

vipor 01-21-2010 10:01 AM

:iagree: think of it like the floormats, which also come boxed/wrapped and the dealer is supposed to install for you during Make Ready

yubman 01-21-2010 12:01 PM

Vipor, does the red Z have the tire "air dams" things installed (red arrow)? Just wondering as I tend to scrape those when pulling into my drive way (thing red arrow points to) and wondered if they were supposed to be there or not.

vipor 01-21-2010 12:10 PM

not that i saw. it's my feeling that they're there to be scratched. that's what i tell myself about the skid plate on the bottom of my Nismo bumper. that thing has burrs all over it :p

Pretty easy clean-up.

Grab a razor blade and cut-off the excess plastic that's frayed. It actually cleans up pretty nice and you can't tell unless you're 2 feet away that it was ever scraped.

I don't park in the driveway anymore.

Spartan 1771 01-21-2010 03:13 PM

I have yet to see one of these installed in person. Like I said, I drove through the local dealership a few days ago (which is not the dealership I purchased my Z from) and none of the Zs on the lot had it installed.

simota1 01-21-2010 04:08 PM

maybe the dealership is holding them and not putting them on so they can sell it on ebay :stirthepot: lol im jus kidding....

Spartan 1771 04-09-2010 03:56 PM

Well I still haven't gotten my front chin spoiler. I drove up to the dealership where I purchased the car yesterday. It's over an hour and a half away. I get there, wait an hour and then find myself in an argument with the BEIOTCH assistant service manager. She claimed there was no front chin spoiler for a non-Nismo Z. The chin spoiler they ordered was for a Nismo, and I don't own a Nismo, so this obviously caused an issue. We went round and round for an hour when I finally got the sales manager involved, who confirmed that there is a front chin spoiler for a non-nismo. He didn't have one in stock, but was nice enough to allow me to use his computer so I could access this thread and show them the part. She never even apologized for her mistake and piss poor attitude.

Apparently they are having a serious issue communicating with the factory about this part. They ordered something, but aren't sure if it's the right one, which doesn't give me any confidence in their ability to solve this issue. Does anyone in here have Nissan's part number for this damn thing?

370Z JT 04-09-2010 04:14 PM

Dealerships here do not install the front spoiler until the car is ready for delivery due to fear of it scraping during a test drive.

Spartan 1771 04-09-2010 04:28 PM

it's the same everywhere. The sales manager stated it comes in the trunk of the car because it makes the car to low and they have issues getting them on and off the delivery trucks.

Thanks! I'll print this out and fax it to the knuckle heads at the service dept.

Spartan 1771 04-20-2010 07:53 AM

Once again I'm scheduled to go in for the installation of the front chin spoiler. 10am on Monday 4/26/2010. Hopefully this time they ordered the right part, and not a chin spoiler for a GT-R.

If I drive an hour and a half again through Washington DC rush hour traffic and they don't have it right this time, there will be hell to pay.

We shall see!

Spartan 1771 05-05-2010 12:27 PM

And so the saga of the front end chin spoiler continues…………………….

Episode III: There’s No Hope

Once again, I drive 90 minutes through horrendous Washington DC beltway traffic to the dealership to get the front end chin spoiler installed, that was supposed to come with it upon delivery back in September. I arrive and EVERYONE kissed my ***. So much so that it was sorta scary. I guess the 45 minute conversation I had with the Service Manager last month had some effect.

I leave my car with them and then go outside and walk around their lot looking at all the cars for about 45 minutes. I got tired of that so I decided to go inside and wait in their waiting room. On the way in the Service Advisor grabs me and says “Well, this is really turning out to be a major science project”. I didn’t take that statement to mean anything good. She sat me down and VERY politely explained that according to the directions, the front bumper needs to be removed and holes need to be punched for the installation. I explained to her several people I speak to on this forum have installed it without removing the bumper and have had no issues. Of course she dismisses that as pure crazy talk and proceeds to tell me they want to have their body shop do the install.

So now I have to travel back up there on the 23rd and leave it with their body shop, who I have had major issues with in the past.

On further note, I pointed out to them 3 Z’s on their lot that are supposed to have the front end chin spoiler, but don’t.

……………………………..I need a drink!

WOW! Sounds like you should go to another Nissan dealership...and ask if they know of what part you are talking about. Maybe have them call your dealership for explanation. I bought the front chin aero deflector from Nissan Z 300ZX 350Z 370z aftermarket part and accessories - Ultimate Z ( go under 370z and than body)
and you'll find the part you are looking for. i suggest you get the part and take it to a reputable body shop for install. Or do it yourself. I think it needs a hole on both sides and double sided tape.

If you don't have the chin spoiler the bumper can make contact when moving from a flat plane to certain inclined planed angles. The chin prevents the total drop of the bummper onto the planed surface. That is the purpose of the chin spoiler.

So which would you rather have happen... a scraped and paint scratched bumper undersurface or a chin spoiler that has a slightly rarely seen barely perceptable worn area?

Spartan 1771 05-08-2010 10:15 AM

They have the right part. I saw it myself when I was there, along with the directions. The directions do say it requires you to remove the front bumper, but people here have stated they did it without removing it. I'm just so fed up right now.

I'm going to take it to their body shop for the install because I need them to do something else as well. My car was hit when I first got it and the front bumper had to be replaced (see the pics in one of my on line albums). When they wet sanded the new bumper and fender they missed a very small spot, so they have to touch that up. Hopefully I will be able to kill two birds with one stone. It's going to the shop on the 23rd.

cab83_750 05-08-2010 11:33 AM

Does the 'aero package' include the front spoiler? I paid for this and I don't have it? Same thing with the deflector as pointed by the arrow; I don't have that either.

Crap. Stupi me. My car is one year old and I wonder what kind of crap I will get if I go back to the dealer.

Spartan 1771 05-09-2010 05:27 PM

Cab83, Sounds like you’re in the same boat! The aero package includes both the rear wing and the front chin spoiler, as does the sports package. To my knowledge, the front deflectors are not apart of any package. They come with the car regardless of the options you purchase.

ummie4 05-18-2012 06:18 PM

I just received my front chin spoiler from z1 and I can not figure out how to install it! The smaller straight lip is part of the factory bumper (can't unbolt it) and its in the way of the new aero lip! I am clueless HELP!

Augustus 05-18-2012 06:42 PM

Can't help with the spoiler, but the deflectors, you can definitely do that yourself. No drilling required.

The pair were wrapped in plastic and in the trunk when I bought mine. Each has three bolts but I think only 4 bolts are in the package because one of the bolts on each side is already attached under the car as it holds on some other bit of trim. Remove that bolt, place deflector, bolt all 3 up. Holes are already there, in front of the wheels. Super easy. Took me about 5 minutes to attach both sides the morning after I bought my Z.

Oh, and mines just a Touring; no other packages. Pretty sure the deflectors are supposed to be standard to all Z's.

Good luck with the spoiler.

ummie4 05-18-2012 07:31 PM

Yes mine is just touring. The deflectors came installed. I think im just gonna take it into the dealer. z1 is misleading when it says "direct bolt on"
