F.U. OEM knob. - removal

Lol I tried to keep it in good condition..... Gave up after 30 mins and started to applied force + vice grips...still not off.... Tried using hair blower to loosen the locktite... same thing, won't budge...any suggestions? I've read almost every thread on this and watched all YouTube videos on this, I'm scared I'll **** up the transmission if I keep trying..

Halp. :( I'm at the point where it's gonna be in pieces by the end of the nighthttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...034802faa0.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...d3a30f53bb.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...d541e4a4a6.jpg

Could try sacrificing a goat or something. Its in gods hands now :D RIP shift knob

Z_ealot 04-29-2017 06:23 PM

Lots of duck tape wrapped around the shift knob and you're supposed to be using a strap wrench not vice grips

HIZZY 04-29-2017 06:24 PM

looks like a pit bull went to town on that thing. good lord.

JTM88 04-29-2017 06:28 PM

I had to lift up the trim piece and use a wrench as a backup

Yup, that's exactly why I gave up trying to remove the OEM shift knob. Now my beautiful blue turtle TK Hebi Bebi is sitting on my desk. It's the most expensive paperweight I've ever had the privilege of owning.

Kzonts 04-29-2017 06:41 PM

This is really simple if you use the right tools. Leverage is the key. And as they say, don't bring a knife to a gun fight :-)

SouthArk370Z 04-29-2017 07:29 PM

As others have mentioned, you need something (eg, strap wrench) with a long handle. With enough leverage, you can move the World. ;)

OhioYJ 04-29-2017 07:38 PM

Don't worry about the transmission. The shifter doesn't go directly into the transmission, it bolts to linkage that runs to the transmission.

Hope you already have a new knob on hand.

Nixin 04-29-2017 07:40 PM

Nissan must've used two bottles of loctite on the threads. The f#cking shift knob is on there for good. They may have even fused it on. I have used every tool and every method from every thread and no joy. I will figure something out, even if I have to destroy that POS OEM knob.

If you don't get it off sell your paperweight local :D

Akinari 04-29-2017 07:49 PM

Oh my god, What the **** happened to that thing LOL.

I'd lend you my strap wrench, but ... I think you're already too far gone in your removal of the knob.... :icon14:

The knob itself started to rotate so it should come off as long as whatever you're gripping that thing with doesn't slip.

Get a very large pair of plyers to hold the shifter below. Then use a oil filter strap wrench with a breaker bar. The breaker bar fits into the square metal end. Worked for me perfectly.

barncobob 04-29-2017 08:09 PM

is it righty tighty and CCW to remove? or maybe vice versa?:icon14:

barncobob 04-29-2017 08:18 PM

id try one of those chain wrenches, looks like bicycle chain with a handle on it, piece of pipe for a cheater bar. i think they make one for oil filters that would be the right size.

The chain wrench is about the only tool I haven't tried yet. Will try this as well. Somethings gotta budge this SOB.

Fuzzzy 04-29-2017 08:46 PM

I would just leave it with that nice weathered look.

ryennn 04-29-2017 09:48 PM

Guys

I got it off finally LOL. Had to buy another vice grip and lifted the boot, had to get my colleague to help grip the bottom while I used the other vice grip to counter turn the knob....that still took us 15-20 mins to get it off....rip OEM knob you PITA. -- OEM knob free if anyone wants it ;) https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...babe342399.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...0a6bcd4012.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...3a16e9ec54.jpg

DESTROY THAT POS. I HATE IT. I'm going to hammer it into pieces because of what it put me through, that SOB.

Lol.

On a more serious note; I think a vice grip on the bottom part after you lift the boot, and a microfiber cloth + strap wrench (or another vice grip like me) and turn both at the same time will work 100%; bottom one clockwise, top part(the knob) counter-clock wise and turn together so the bottom is resisting.

ScottM 04-30-2017 09:01 AM

Best DIY thread hehe. You should ship this back to Nissan with a note "F YOU!!!"

You beat me to the keyboard, lol. I would translate the "F You" into Japanese so that there is no confusion when they open the package.

kenchan 04-30-2017 12:38 PM

some Z's come from the factory using waaay too much loctite and does not come off without shredding the knob. even if u duct tape over it, the knob itself can not withstand the amount of torque from the twisting and comes apart. yes, scratchless but in pieces.'

if a strap wrench worked for u, consider urself lucky.

JckHmr 05-01-2017 12:08 PM

Oh man! I got my shift knob off in 10 minutes with my dad and I taking turns twisting it with our hands. And I thought mine was hard, Jesus Christ!

But you can bend the shifter linkage if you don't put a wrench on it under the boot.

Take it to a dealer and tell them it fell apart in your hand while shifting gears :icon17:

2016 370z 05-03-2017 04:10 PM

Looks like you had a lot of fun removing the stock shift knob :O

Rusty 05-03-2017 09:08 PM

Oh crap! :rofl2: Mine was off in 2 minutes, and even took a break. :rofl2: I wrapped a rag around it, then duct tape around the rag. Put a 12" pipe wrench on it to break the loc-tite. Then unscrewed by hand.

Nixin 05-04-2017 06:50 AM

It appears that Nissan progressively increased the amount of loctite every year. Hence a '12 has more loctite than an '11 but less than a '13. In '15 Nissan stopped using loctite and began using super crazy glue!

In '15 Nissan stopped using loctite and started welding the threads to the shifter.
