Is rust in the interior like this normal?

Hi guys,

So I was cleaning my car and noticed that the rails on my A-pillar had small spots of rust on them. I pulled off the A-pillar panel and took the following pictures. Is this normal? At first I thought there was a leak into my car, but now I'm starting to think that the metal just wasn't coated properly and is spot rusting. What do you guys think? Pictures are of my passenger side A-pillar with the panel removed.

BTW, car is a 2013 G37. (I know, I'm in the wrong forum)

It looks like some surface rust, but I don't like it. I haven't checked mine...

JARblue 03-17-2017 03:56 AM

That's shitty. At 90K miles, I've got nothing like at my a-pillars or roof line :twocents:

Pic links dead?

Live close to the ocean or park at the beach often? Windows cracked when parked?

SouthArk370Z 03-17-2017 10:23 AM

No pic showing up.

If it's just light surface rust, it shouldn't be a big deal. If there is any pitting, I'd suggest sanding and priming.

It looks like just light surface rust from the pics I saw earlier. But I would definitely want to look at it closer before deciding not to do anything.

My house is like 50 yards from the ocean, and Z is parked there half the year. I haven't noticed any rust on my Z car.

No, garage kept. But I bought the car a year ago, and it could have been from the previous owner.

Looks like surface rust I could quickly sand and paint. But I was just wondering what could have caused this? I'm going to wash my car on the weekend and check for any possible leaks.

Thank you! Sorry, didn't realize that post with pics had to be approved. Will note for the future.

Only for new members - after probation and a prodding you're good to go

When I had my little windshield roof ding repair I noticed rust forming within a week.

It was sanded fixed respray ed. As everyone has said it's hard to tell from the picture. It doesn't look super bad but rust is well... rust

I can't tell from pics, but is the windshield original OEM glass? I have seen stuff like this and worse happen when chain glass places send out the newb to replace windshield, they cut and seal with a blade and cut into paint on outside of pillar, then a few years later you have pillar cancer.

That's another possibility I was considering. I'm just going to paint and seal it and see if it comes back.

BTW, is there a way to tell if a windshield is OEM?

Don't know if it's still required but older glass has to have a "bug" etched into it with manufacturer and other info. In bottom right corner, IIRC.

Edit: Checked my 2014 Challenger and it has a bug in the lower right corner. Door windows have the bug on bottom rear.

Hit it with a little of this too- or its equivalent...

Didn't want to assume that he had the correct info listed. Mine was out of date up until today. Sold the z a couple of weeks ago.

No worries, I thought it was just funny to point out.

Good reason though, as I've seen some seriously corroded undercarriages of Z's on this forum and they lived in Florida. I'm in a salt/snow belt state and even my dd's didn't look dat horrible underneath.

Op's car looks more like a factory defect on da pre-primer process

Looks to me like your rust is a little too deep to just paint over. I'd try some naval jelly (or similar) since space is restricted.
