what are our bumper covers made from?
I've tried googling it and all I can find are parts for sale. so my NISMO conversion bumper was in the body shop getting painted, and they called me to tell me that after they put the sealer/primer on it, they found a crack. He said he didn't normally like to repair those plastic bumpers, and for me to call who I bought it from and see if they'd exchange it. Of course they told me that they couldn't do anything now that it's been painted. They also told me that the shop should be able to repair a urethane bumper like that no problem. So researching a little bit, I found a site that talked about urethane bumpers being the kind like you'd find on an old Cadillac or something.
What are my options here, other than just telling the shop they have to replace it at their cost? Is it made from urethane? Can it be repaired? https://c5.staticflickr.com/6/5696/3...2d8698f4_b.jpg |
If nobody comes up with an answer, that info may be in the FSM.

Pretty sure it would be polyurethane.

That is very much repairable. They use a special resin to mend it and minor bodywork. Where it broke is a stress point each time you take off the bumper. A must do when you have long tube CAIs.
Lastly, your shop did not prep before they painted. They should do a visual before starting work. Fail in my book. |
Yup, agree with above. Your body shop didn't notice a crack before painting the damn bumper?! Sloppy as hell.
And then they can't repair urethane, which is what damn near every OEM bumper (short of some carbon fiber **** for high end sports cars) is made of? What fuckin shop is this? |
They said because the bumper was black plastic they didn't notice before the put that sealer on it. He said they sprayed that on it to see the minor imperfections before they started prep work, and that's why they noticed.
I think maybe they cracked it and are trying to cover themselves since they'd be responsible for it since I bought it and brought it in. It really surprises me because I've taken two other cars to them before and their work was impeccable. That's why I didn't even think about another shop. I mean the fixed my mustang when it was nearly a total loss and you couldn't find a trace of repair work. |
