Opinion on Wraps Vs. New Paint
Hello, I currently have a Black Cherry 370z and was pondering new paint. The price of paint Vs. Vinyl wrap is not significantly different so I was wondering on your guys opinion. I'm thinking of two toning my car, either black and red or black and blue. Say start at black in the back and half down the car start to fade to the second color.
What do you guys think? |
Wrap vs. paint is actually significantly different, especially when you do it yourself. It's not as hard as people make it out to be but time consuming for those who don't have experience or training.
A crappy paint job may be comparable to a wrap done by a shop but don't even bother doing that. If you go paint, do it right. And doing it right will cost you money. My opinion on two tone is don't do it. But to each their own. |

If I had the money to spend on a legitimate paint job, that's what I'd choose. If I wanted a color change of an already suitable paint job, I'd wrap it.
But yes, it's very hard to not get at least a couple imperfections with vinyl wrap. |

I'd go with a wrap. Two tone is extremely trendy and you're likely to change your mind later down the line. You can always go back if you wrap but a paint job is far more permanent. A wrap also protects the underlying paint, which could be a good or a bad thing because when you remove it some panels may appear newer than others.
Wraps, on the other hand, scuff more easily. They will typically last 2-3 years if you park out in the sun constantly. Also depends on how harsh the sun is in your region. It'll last much longer if you're parked in a garage. |

Well not to long ago I was looking at the same thing. I found that a good single color wrap would cost about 1/2 the cost of a good single color paint job. Paint will last a very long time, a wrap over 5 years I'm told with be very difficult to remove, it would still look good if taken care of and not left in the sun often, UV rays are bad for paint but very bad for vinyl. Vinyl is a type of plastic and UV breaks down plastic polymers.
So here's my wrap. http://www.the370z.com/members/2011-...z-kpmf-1-2.jpg In 5 years if I'm board of it I can remove it and get another or go back to the original black. And be at the same or under the cost of paint. With paint I would be out a lot more money today and would be stuck with it for the life of the car. Also every dipped car I have seen has never looked as good as a wrap or paint job. I'm sure it could be done well, I just haven't seen it yet. |
I believe that the wrap is the best way to go, especially if you get bored of the colour or simply want to change your mind down the road. Although no wrap is perfect, either are new pain jobs. Imperfections can and will afflict both. Let us know what you decide on and how it turns out.

How much does wrapping the whole car cost?
|
$2,000-$3,000
|
^^ With material being around $500-$900 of that cost, depending on what material and brand you choose. Choose matte chrome's, chromes, textures, carbon fibers and the price will go up.
It's time consuming so shops will charge a pretty penny for labor. |
