high pitched whistling noise

Whenever I'm driving at freeway speeds and I step on the gas peddle, I can hear a very high pitched whistling noise. Almost like wind going through a very tight spot. It's not loud or anything and can only be heard if it silent in the car. Anyone else experiencing something similar?

Billibob22 08-13-2015 10:41 AM

I say its like driving a mean machine. My 40th does that too..

I smell ECU whine.

How old are you OP?

TerribleONE 08-13-2015 10:51 AM

Silent car at freeway speeds? Are you sure you have a Z?

26... is this a common issue? I'm still under extended warranty. Should I take it to the dealership?

Another source of whistling is if you have one of the door A/C vents closed.

But why would it stop if I let off the gas peddle?

He's asking about age because younger people generally have better hearing. Young women in particular can often hear very high pitched noises that other cannot. Older folks won't notice them near as much. So grab that cute, young receptionist if you ever need help in that regard ;)

If it's a whistle, I suspect something in the intake is making the noise. If it's a whine, then probably the ECM. Someone in the passenger seat should be able to tell if it's the ECM (ECM in in passenger footwell area; see FSM for details).

Unless it really bothers you, not worth worrying about.

I guess I'll leave it alone for now. It's barley noticeable and that's after someone points it out.

i hear a buzz that comes from the passenger seat once in awhile. checked the harness and connections and they were in place.

only happens on rough pavement and when no passenger sitting.

it's a sign... need more co-pilots.

Besides the ECU whine and Speaker whines. I remember reading a few threads here of people hearing a winding noise coming from their engine bay. Turned out to be the throttle bodies

Its ur window, if it isnt adjusted correct it will let air through in high speeds, i had that 80+mph.:tiphat:

I only hear it when I press the gas peddle. If I let off it goes away.

While a leaky window seal is low on my list of possibilities, I wouldn't rule it out. Even the Z frame/body will twist a little bit under acceleration, which could cause the seal to move away from the window if things are marginal to start with. Should be very easy for a passenger to tell if it's the seal or not.

I know my whistle sound is from some panel gap near the front passenger side because it only gets louder with speed. I suspect something came a little loose one time when I bottomed out in an incline. Actually finding where it's coming from is going to be a pain because you don't want to be under the car at 70.
