Noise when disengaging clutch in 1st
 

Quick question, I just bought a 2014 370z nismo about 2 months ago, only 3k miles on it but every time I am driving at a low speed <10 mph in 1st gear and slowing down to a complete stop I engage the clutch to switch to neutral to stop, and it makes a rattling noise. I am fairly new to manual transmissions, am I doing something wrong? Or is there another issue causing this? Thanks in advance

Is it really a rattling noise or chattering noise as this is very common or normal with the Z. No need to worry this is the sound of flywheel disengaged with the clutch disc.

I know the noise you are talking about, its more like a chattering noise. When I first heard the noise it freaked me out :eek: because I thought the transmission was jacked up, then I searched the forums and found out its normal for 370z's.

As you get smoother with the shifting it will not happen as much, I can't remember the last time I heard it.

Absolutely normal for this car. Multitude of threads about it.

as other's have mentioned it happens often...

there are a few circumstances that make this sound more prominent. on an incline (nose facing up) and also when i been working the clutch a lot (such as stop n go). It gets a bit of a clucking/clicking noise when in neutral but as soon as i push in the clutch it goes away.

just as a precautionary action, check your clutch fluid (the reservoir under the lid on the driver side) once a week prior to driving. yea it's a PITA but that extra minute to check your fluids could save you heart ache.

IF it's dropping i suggest taking it back into the dealership and get them to check it out (probably a csc) if it's not then here's what you need to do.

The drivetrains on these cars are very 'mechanical sounding'. It's hard to explain but you kind of hear the transmission working. You can feel the shifter vibrating and pulling a bit when you start to accelerate. It's all normal and part of the Z experience IMO.

Mine does the same..Its annoying. Ive learned to work the clutch though and doesn't happen a often.

Just ease off the gas a bit or don't let out the clutch as much. Learn how the car wants you to drive it. While the chatter may be normal for some, you should not hear it if you are driving the car properly. An occasional chatter is no big deal, but it shouldn't be happening every time you take off in first gear.

I get it up an incline coming out of underground parking, waiting for the garage door to open. I find that if I touch the brakes before engaging the clutch, the noise is less or does not happen.

well said. the z is just very noisy, not just the engine, but also the transmission. there is so much noise while idling and it can be quite scary if you are new to the car. It seems to have more when cold and evolves into different noise when hot.

I thought I had a rod bearing problem when I first got the car. Yeah, the shifter also vibrates more than usual.

Both the engine and trans have been around for a long time. Hopefully they have worked out most of the bugs.... And it is normal to consume some oil within a couple of thousand miles.

Its a sports car its meant to be that way.

With Porsche you even have to pay more to make it sound and feel mechanical
such as the GT3

Porches are so quiet on the inside you don't even know your speeding. In the z you feel like your speeding all the time cause its so loud.

Have you driven a GT3 RS?

i think the noise you are referring to is actually road noise from the tire, road and suspension.

The engine & exhaust is fairly tamed.
