I live in Vegas and have been suffering with this issue every summer. I get a massive delay in throttle response at low RPMs when in hot conditions. First gear, foot to the ground and no power until 3k rpm and then it bursts into life - feels like really bad turbo lag. I have the Stillen Gen3 intakes and have wrapped them with gold tape heat insulation to try and keep the IAF sensor temps down. It seems to have helped, but has not cured the problem.

It's not just the delay, but it's quite interesting. I had this when my car was stock. With forced induction I have trouble building up boost as if the throttle is opening up at a slower or limited. I can floor it in 2nd past 4k RPM and barely get 5 PSI, whereas I normally get at least 5 PSI at half throttle when "colder."

Warranty Issue?
Okay, a lot of us have noticed it, but not everyone. I did not have it in my previous Z, but seem to notice it in the new one. The previous 2012, wow! You hit it and it blast off, no so now. Do you think the technicians can tune this out?

It has been an ongoing discussion since 2009. An oil cooler helps. My vented hood works wonders as well. So my issue isn't as frequent.

I had the exact same issue come up this summer. Foot down hard on the gas in 1st and nothing until about 3-4K rpm, and even then it feels like barely 10 hp. very frustrating and honestly it felt unsafe to drive in traffic like that
Anyways I just put on the new triple pass radiator from CSF and a 34 row oil cooler from fast intentions. Has not happened since then. Oil temps dropped 30-40*F and coolant dropped 40-50*F huge difference in performance! |
Yup, mine is boggy in 1st and 2nd gear when temps get above 105*, but it does not do it all the time. The car performs well in 3rd and above even with temps are over 115*. I have an FI 34 row oil cooler and their twin turbo but even with tt I only saw oil temps of 235* in rush hour traffic in Phoenix and it was a 118*. When the car came up to speed, 65mph the temps would fall to 220*. I think a vented hood and a CFS triple pass radiator are in order by next summer.
Also I don't know if it worth messing with the tune when you are talking extreme conditions for a short time unless you are tracking, then you need to do anything you can to get cooling. |
if you have aftermarket cold air intakes, get some house sarking foil material and attach a large sheet underneath each of the pipes from the throttle body all the way to the radiator. Cable tie each corner to something sturdy and keep the sarking material away from the piping as much as possible. The larger the air gap, the better. Shiny side facing the ground.
Adhesive foil wraps do jack all. Even with the layer of fibreglass underneath, it doesnt deliver much bang for buck. This won't work for stock intakes or short ram intakes due to space constraints and location of air intake for the latter. Digi - have a read of my throttle lag thread. I have new developments which you might be interested in. Hope you have a multimeter handy! |
