Weird clicking noise from rear?

Hey guys! I've had my 370Z since 09 and everything has been great so far - with the exception of my clutch's fluid needing to be replaced last year, and of course the occasional high oil temperatures.

ISSUE #1

About a few months ago, I noticed that whenever I hold the clutch, there is a weird clicking sound coming from the rear - possibly driver side rear? It's not very noticeable, but since I'm the only driver, it gets annoying since I hear it even subconsciously you could say haha.

I took it to my local Nissan dealership, had a technician take it for a ride with me and he said it's normal. I doubt it's "normal" since this sound is recent and I've had the car for about 5 years now.

ISSUE #2

Another issue I've had since I bought the car in 09 is sometimes when I'm in first gear, the car sounds like a truck - it has this weird gruntle sound to it. I don't know what is causing this sound, but it happens once every 10 times I drive the car.

Shifting from 1st gear to 2nd gear is also annoying, but I've read that this is normal in the Z.

Thanks for the read, hopefully you guys can figure this out and/or encountered similar problems

Is this when sitting still or when moving? Does the ticking change when vehicle speed changes? Does it go away when you engage the clutch? Enquiring Minds Want To Know!

It's pretty much only when moving - even at really low speeds like 5km/h - but if you go at higher speeds - I'd say above 50km/h - you won't hear it. I've noticed that the sound appears when I engage the clutch 99% of the time, there is a 1% chance that the sound might appear when making a turn.

I'm really upset and don't know what to do

I'm no expert, so take this with a grain of salt, but it could be the rear axle spline lube. Going by what I have read on this site, it a fairly common problem. I read someone's explanation of the fix (re-grease the splines) and it sounded like an easy job for most DIYers, but I've never done it. Someone who can be more help should chime in soon. Or search the site. I have better luck using Google/DuckDuckGo/&c and adding "site:the370z.com" to my search string; the site's built-in search doesn't work well for me.

Okay, thanks! :D

I have a feeling it might be the rear axle as well, does anyone know how to find out forsure?

the only way to see it is to remove rear wheel and then remove the axle nut and then you can see the splines...
This issue is covered here in forum with pics and instructions, just search for axle.

Sounds like the half shafts need lube, but i just tightened them and no clicking since, it was about 7k miles ago, ull need 32mm long socket remove wheel and tighten it there's a DIY for it on this site. Also the car sound like a truck is normal in 1st, high oil temp above 220F is no good, get an oil cooler its worth the $ even a cheap one still helps, but if u wanna go boosted later better buy good one.

Rear axle needs re-greasing like everyone stated. I have the same problem for 15k miles now and had no time to fix it. Hopefully it doesnt brake down on me :roflpuke2:
