Remember when?

You didn't have sissy safety switches for clutch, brake, etc.? When you just knocked it out of gear to crank it?

I'm hankering for those days, so what do you think about paralleling a momentary switch with the "Clutch In" switch? In one year, since I crank probably 4 times a day roughly 350 days a year, so that's 1,400 times a year I wouldn't have to push the clutch pedal to crank. That's a lot of wear and tear on the old O-Ring on the CSC.
Safety wise I've never had an issue with manuals in the past unless stoned or severely distracted (cranking in gear), so it seems like a safe CSC saving mod.

All it took was a few people launching their car through the back of the garage in the morning after they left it in gear, and now we have a switch. Damn lawyers.

No lawyers involved but I was one of those people a long time ago! When I was younger I raced jetskis and drove a Cherokee that had a stick. It's so flat in Florida that I never parked it in gear but at a race I had someone else park the truck. I went back to the truck after the races and the fumes from the race gas sitting in the sun about knocked me out so I reached in to start the truck to cool it down. The second I hit it the truck took off in reverse knocking the crap out of me with my door. Me and my broken arm managed to get in and stop it right before it smashed into a very expensive bus parked behind me. I have never hit a starter again without knowing it was out of gear.

It should be very easy to do. If the ECM (BCM? It's been a while since I looked at that section of the FSM) is looking for a transition, you may want to use a momentary contact switch, but that's a minor detail. If the pedal switch opens when you push the pedal, you'll want to put your switch in series. You can probably figure out what is required in the FSM. If nobody comes up with details soon, I'll see what I can figure out.

See, that's the difference between a decent human being and the typical American. You took your lumps and learned your lesson. They would have sued everyone involved down to the jet ski manufacturer.

I looked in the BCM portion and it references a response in the Nissan toolkit that was open or closed but it didn't infer the status of the switch itself, rather a report from the Nissan utility that I feel doesn't reflect the status of the actual switch contacts directly. I'll just tap and measure.

I just checked the STR section of the 2009 FSM and it looks like all you need is a single-pole switch in parallel with the clutch pedal switch. When the new switch is open, starter works normally. When the new switch is closed, the car will start without clutch pedal being depressed.

Edit: In addition to the "pedal pushed" signal to the computer, the power for the starter relay coil goes through the switch so don't skimp on wire size. Use something close to the factory wiring.

Does the BCM also check for neutral position on the shifter itself, or does it *only* check the clutch? (If it doesn't, it would be cool to find a way to hack it to check for neutral instead of the clutch).

I see no mention of the 6MT needing to be in any certain position to start. As far as I can tell (but I haven't dug very deep), the gear position sensor is only used for SRM.

"The starter motor magnetic switch is supplied with power when the ignition switch is turned to the START position while the selector lever is in the P or N position for A/T models or the clutch pedal is depressed for M/T models." - Page STR-10 of 2009 FSM.

I can tell you from experience that it doesn't care about the gear position. I had the cat lurch back on me because I failed to check that it was in neutral before starting the car after letting someone else drive.

OK, so after more thought, since I NEVER turn off VDC, I could use that switch (with a relay and appropriate gauge wire) to bypass the clutch switch. That way, when I start, just wriggle *neutral* then press VDC switch and Start button simultaneously. Voila' start!, with no wear and tear on the CSC thingy. And, if I need to return to stock nothing is done to the car that anyone could ever see.
