More "possible" 7AT issues

Hey there!
I'll try and be quick with this. I'm aware of the common issues with the 7AT mentioned throughout this forum and I have done a fair amount of research. I believe that I too am starting to experience these issues now that my new job has me working downtown in A LOT more stop and go traffic.

The trans is VERY jumpy and pops at low speeds. Today when it shifted (while in D) from 2nd to 1st if plopped down a gear and felt as if the car was in neutral. I went back on the throttle it revved to about 1k and lurched forward.
I believe this is cause for concern. I will be stopping by the Nissan dealership after work tomorrow and will hopefully get this sorted out peacefully.

I would appreciate other 7AT users input. Seems many of you report issues but, never report back with cost, time spent, actual problem etc...

megalapagas 03-13-2014 06:38 PM

I haven't had that issue man and I'm almost at 75k miles on mine 2010/7AT/Youring sport package.....and I do Spirted driving aswell as OCASIONAL drag runs...

i live in chicago and in the cold usually at low speeds going from 1st to 2nd it kicks and sometimes i look around like someone rear ended me or something

it happens when slowing to a stop also it will jerk like the car was hit by someone

i haven't tried to change tranny fluid i'd probably start there if anyone has suggestions would like to hear
i did not notice this issue in summer but this was only my first 6 mo with car and it has only 17k miles

Fantastic Z 03-13-2014 06:51 PM

Only 34k on my Z and I tend to notice more rough shifts (downshift) once everything has warmed up. In my experience that is a sign of fluid issues or breakdown since it loses it's viscosity.

haha yeah I too think I've gotten rear ended with how bad it jerked. First time I REALLY noticed it, I actually got out of my car :rofl2: NOT COOL!

Once in a blue it will at a bit quirky with a sudden rough down shift, especially after driving around an shifting manually then going back to D (there is some sort of learning trim on gear shifting).

The trans is probably fine, although if you are over 34K, you are about due to have the diff fluid changed.

I actually have a practically new VLSD from a sport model (less than 4k on it) in my basement waiting to be installed. Redline fluid, Whitleline bushings and new hardware.

Sounds a lot like what an older automatic would do if low on fluid - slip when RPM are low and then "catch" when RPM increase enough for the pump to start working again. Newer autos are similar enough to the older ones that I'd get the level checked. At 34K on the odometer, it might be a good idea to go ahead and have the trans fluid changed.

megalapagas 03-13-2014 08:33 PM

So I'm at 74k miles....I'm scheduling a tranny fluid change at the dealer....would a Diff fluid also be of need?? Its a noob question but better ask than qonder "What If?"...

RoadsterST 03-13-2014 09:18 PM

Ask them to check for TCM updates. Mine does it occasionally but it seems to be trying to downshift at too high a RPM. Normally is when I go from manual to auto it will do it the first time I come to a complete stop.

If you haven't changed your diff fluid yet, you are going to want to get that done. Preferably with Redline 75w90.

I'm about 28k and really like to drive in manual mode most of the time and do notice a little jerk when downshifting from 2nd to first when I switch back to auto mode.

Honestly think its just the computer picking back up where you left it.

:tiphat:

Well I stopped by the dealership after work and they were swamped and couldn't take me in until Monday :(
Today a new issue popped up. While in my usual stop and go traffic shortly after the car upshifts into 3rd. It will do so VERY slowly while at speed and the RPMs drop to around 1,100 and when I begin to throttle up they somewhat bounce around (+/- a few 100 rpm) and finally is calms down and I go about my way.
WTF man

Fantastic Z 03-14-2014 09:58 PM

Haha I bought it off of a forum member Felix 808. He commented a few posts back. I still haven't installed it due to weather and now this odd trans issue :/

That's great... I have been looking for a manual tranny (vlsd) "sport" rear diff pumpkin. Even Felix 808 has tried to help me locate one with no luck.

Mine had been doing this with only 12k on it but after changing oil in the diff last week it all went away.

Fantastic Z 03-27-2014 01:04 PM

Sorry for not updating this sooner. I did get my Z back from the dealership and two different technicians told me that the popping/jerking was considered "normal" operation of the 7AT. To an extent I will believe that but, I did ask them to document my visit thoroughly and that when the problem becomes more consistent (which over the hot summer it will) I will bring it back them for more investigating.

I have yet to attempt my own trans fluid work as I do not have the proper tool for the lower trans pan fitting. The diff may aid somewhat to the jerking with the OE bushings and fluid. As soon as I get time the new diff with poly bushings and better fluid will be installed in hopes to alleviate that jerking motion.

yeah it's as if the computer is re-adjusting the throttle and rpm. I get the same jerk sometimes.

Yeah that is pretty common design flaw of the 7AT, I drove brand new Infiniti Q50S, EX37 and G37 vehicles with the 7AT transmissiosn and they all do the same clunk occasionally, especially when you do a hard stop while simultaneously switching back to D ( Full Auto ). I drive these cars very often since they are all my customers car and I can confirm that. Nothing we can do about this. No TSB for reprogramming either. But so far it did no harms, just annoying, that's all.
