1st to 2nd grind...Thank god for drivetrain warranty
On 2-3 occasions over the past month I had been getting locked out/getting a horrible grind when up-shifting into 2nd at high RPM. Initially I thought maybe it was just me, but being paranoid the synchros were going I decided to take it into Nissan to have it checked out.
Sure enough the tech drove it and was able to duplicate the problem, "when really getting on it" lol. 2 hours later they called me to let me know that they would be replacing the transmission under warranty. Transmission arrived today and the Z is scheduled for surgery. Im having them put redline MT-85 in it. I do drive the car pretty hard from time to time, but was surprised that the synchros went bad at 35,000 miles. Really happy with the guys at Nissan for really looking into the problem and honoring the warranty. Needless to say I'm going to take it a bit easier on my first to second shifts. But hey, what do you expect when you go from a 99' mercury sable to a Z. :driving: |
Actually 35k is about when something like that would go out. Most likely it was a machining or defect in the metal that led to the early failure. This is a good thing and why cars come with warranties. I wouldn't worry about it unless you start breaking syncros every 35k, then it might be your driving style.
Also I went from a 4 banger '98 S-10 to the Z, I enjoy spirited shifting as well :driving: |
Including the original, I dealt with 3 transmissions. Even with the 350Z all will occasionally lock out or grind into 2nd at high RPM. It's pretty embarrassing.

On my second trans, lost 2nd all together... you have to delay the shift to second or it will grind to the moon and back, new one does it too. When you pull to second, pull it almost the whole way, wait a hair of a second, you will feel the gear line up, them grab second, if you try to quick shift...GRIND. Really costing some time in my 1/4 mile runs, super annoying. If I could find upgrsded internals I will buy a used trans and tear it down...

That's good that they're replacing it without much hassle. Not all dealership are a pita like some people here say. I have a great relationship with the dealer I go to, having purchased a car from them in the past and having most of my maintenance done there also.

I a service advisor at a honda dealer, so I know the guys at nissan, so they won't give me ****. Unless they are actually prove abuse or specifically prove that a mod caused a failure they cannot deny warranty work.
