Loud Whine after Oil change
Has anyone had any issues with using Mobil oil filters? I am running a FI'd car that right before the oil change was running fine with no noise. Went for a oil change (5W-30 Mobil) which was the exact same oil that was in the car. The only difference was I had a FRAM filter on it. Swapped that out to a equivalent Mobil filter and now just after getting on the boost I will get a loud whine that will stay untill the car comes down under about 3500rpms, then stop.
It wont start whining unless I boost hard. For example I can take it up to redline slowly and have no noise at all. Kind of leads me to believe that something in that Mobil filter is causing a flow restriction in the car. Just curious if anyone has heard or has had any think like this happen (on FI'd or non FI'd cars). Also the oil pressure did not change significantly from oil change to oil change. Going to go out and throw a Fram back on there today and go from there. Thanks Mitch |
Wow.... weird Mitch. That would make me nervous too....

Speaking with Sasha (Boosted Performance) he said he has had a similar issue on his car and switched back to Fram.
If I had to guess I would say the Mobil is not flowing as good as the Fram. Its the only thing that changed on the car between when I drove it into the lube bay and then out of the lube bay. I watched them closely while they did the oil change. |
I'll be very surprised if the noise is coming from the filter. My guess is that the aero panel or some other part is loose and vibrating.

Nothing else changed, the car rolled into the lub bay with everything removed from the underside already (the plastic skid plate was off). They removed the oil, change the filter, added oil and I drove away. Nothing else was touched.
The noise was not there when I drove there, but it was there driving back to work just afterwords. |
PS: I love the thread title... I half expected to read something along the lines of:
"I got my oil changed and they charged me WHAT?!?!?" :roflpuke2: |
Only thing I can suggest is: pop the hood and listen while someone guns the engine. The end of a paper tube core from a roll of paper towels held to your ear will help pinpoint the location of the noise. Lots of moving parts, so be careful - no loose fitting clothes or dangling jewelry, &c.

Mitch, I've been running a Mobile 1 filter since I installed the kit. No noise issues that I'm aware of. The only loud whine I get is the turbo spooling. I'm due for an oil change and have another Mobile 1 filter to reinstall. Hopefully I'll have time to get to it this weekend. I'll report back.

Do you have a oil cooler? I've seen threads where people oil cooler lines made noise.
