What does Stalling Exactly Do
First day i got my car stalled 30 times didnt think twice of it but now that im getting better and not stalling on the off occasion i do stall i feel like a hoe.
what does stalling do and can one or two stalls hurt me right now? |
You're not going to hurt anything stalling the car out. Don't worry about it.
|
oh phew cause today there was a cop in to my left as i was pulling out of a lot and i didnt see him so i retardedly let off the clutch and stalled right in front of him...sigh
|
It kinda hurt my neck and ears a bit when I first stalled a few times. The loud bang and jerk is rough! Scared me, I thought I got hit or something.
|
Eventually it's going to take a toll on the drivetrain if you keep doing it, but I doubt you caused any real damage. Only thing I can think of is damage to the cats from the unburt fuel and/or damage to the engine mounts from the sudden jolts (very unlikely unless you stall 30 times a day). You shouldn't be stalling at all after this point. Are you new to driving a manual? Stalling every once in a while isn't a big deal, but I'd practice on an old car if you're still constantly doing it.
|
yea it was my first manual, i got it now its been almost two weeks? its just that cop caught me by surprise because i didnt see him beside me when i was pulling out of the lot.... lol

The way I taught my gf to drive a manual worked pretty well. Go to an empty parking lot with no parking blocks or curbs. Find two parking spots directly across the aisle from each other. Park in one. Reverse into the other. Drive forward into the original spot. Repeat until smooth. Shifting at speed is easy. It's the low speed stuff that can be tricky.

it hurts your mom's pride too watching her son fail...
no i dont remember the last time i stalled a MT car. |

Last time i stalled my car I parked it and saw a huge dog running towards my car and I was afraid it was going to maul my car and jump on it. So i jumped the hell out and forgot to turn it off. I was in panic mode.

Don't worry. I've stalled numerous times when I got my first car. Just drive more and in a few months you should be confident enough to take girls for a ride, if you know what I mean.
|
I dont mean to brag but I have never had this problem...
|
What's embarrassing is the random stall ill get every six months or so. Just a momentary loss of left foot coordination.
|
I learned to drive a manual years ago, but this is the first manual I've owned, needless to say I've had a few stalls. Most embarrassing was probably meeting up with the local z club for a car show, I pull up and forget to turn off the car before letting go of the clutch, FAIL!
|
if you get stuck on incline again with cars right on your rear and confidence still not 100%, I suggest using parking brake to prevent rolling back. I still use it sometimes on really steep inclines. It just gives that piece of mind that you wont hit anybody behind you especially when threyre really close
|
I stalled my 85 4runner in the left turn lane once... cop gave me a thumbs up as he drove past me. lol :shakes head:

the point is, it doesn't really hurt the car as much as it hurts you psychologically. remember, you drive a sports car, people expect you to be able to handle it. :D otherwise, they just smirk or giggle at you. like having a nice suit, but you dont know how to wear it... aka trying too hard. |
Minsu, stalling your car thirty times......it's totally wasted! I'll give you $25K for it :icon17: Glad to hear you're getting much better at it. After awhile you'll just be totally surprised when you stall it.
|
dude i still stall mine prob once a week and i have been driving stick for over 18 years. You might want to starting off in 2nd gear its much forgiving and won't jerk you around.

I have lived on a lower part of a mountain for the past 20 years, so maybe I'm used to it. But in all honesty, the first week of ownership of the Z, I thought it had hill assist as the car never rolled back an inch. The torque that the Z has, will hold the car in it's place up an incline, if you release the clutch to the beginning part of it's catch point and then release the foot brake. For you new guys to sticks, release the clutch till you see the rpm's on your tach decline a bit, then release your foot brake and then depress gas smoothly. You will not roll backwards. Otherwise, nothing wrong with using the handbrake. |
I remember when I was first learning to drive stick my dad mentioned how there is a "friction point" where when you let the clutch out a certain amount, that the gears will "catch" and start the car moving. It was one of those lightbulb moments and I didn't really stall the car much after having it explained that way.

yea i have the general gist of the damn thingy but like i need to park in my drive way and of course its inclined so not only do i have to go up the damn thing slowly in second but if i dont get as close to my moms car or garage door on my first try im guaranteed a stall there. sigh just stalled before i walked inside to post this post. fml and smh at the same damn time. other than that its been beautiful. now i gotta go to a social event tmr with three asian ladies , this should be interesting ill let you know how it goes

The hand brake method messed me up on inclines more than helped. The key is to stay calm and try to do a smooth engagement. Also while it feels like you're rolling back a ton, its not really as far as you think, so long as you're quick to engage. I typically give it a little more revs awhen starting on an incline as well. Also if you're going up your incline drive slowly, do it in first. Then you can feather the clutch until you're in the spot you need to be. Dont lug it in 2nd creeping up the drive.
Don't worry about stalling here and there. I probably stalled 5-10times my first day and it went away after a few days of driving. |

I catch myself riding the clutch sometimes too. :shakes head: Embarrassing. Quote:
I remember stalling at an intersection (not many cars), but was so embarrassed that I took off and shifted 1-2-3 the best I ever had, because I wasn't thinking about it. My first manual (10yrs ago) I stalled it probably 12 times in the first 3 days. I made my friend drive behind me when I had to go to work so that people wouldn't bitch/see me. :bowrofl: Didn't really stall it much after that. Then I got the Z... such a different feel that I stalled it several times the first few days too. I constantly catch myself almost stalling, or not shifting perfect (herky jerky feeling) still too. |
at most, you will probably just wear out the clutch, honestly dont even worry about it
you will get better, i remember when i first got my Z(it technically is my second manual car but i just learned how to drive stick and i bought my Z so i really learned how to drive on my Z) heck, i have been driving stick for over a year now and i still stall out every now and then, honestly dont worry about what others think, it happens to everyone driving a manual, no matter how experienced they are |
