questions from a new owner: noises and more

Hello,

Got my 2010 370Z a few weeks ago and already did 4000 KMs.

Got a few questions (couldn't find in the search, but i'd be happy if you point me to the right direction):

1. engine makes a strenuous sound above ~5000. it's sounds like it's putting out a big effort suddenly. Hard for me to explain...
2. I hear ticks from the back side (specifically right side) every time i touch the gas pedal (or when i let it go) in low speeds and low RPM.
3. when idling after a drive, even not a high RPM drive, i hear lots of ticks form the catalytic converter (at least i think it's coming from there).
4. also, when taking a hard turn while NOT touching the gas, car sometimes makes a small jump forward, as if i touched the gas for a split second.
5. unrelated: when filling gas, tank is full but meter on the dashboard shows one bar less than maximum.

are these normal?

Thanks

Roni

welcome to the family...turn up your radio and enjoy the z. ok, so I know none of that helps, hopefully some more seasoned owners can contribute more than I. congrats on the purchase.

The car has a lot of mechanical whirs. The exhaust... well it just sounds terrible in stock form. It's mind blowing how neutered it is. The clutch chatters, the shifter shakes, not sure about ticking though. The fuel gauge is a common issue. I believe it's the measuring device getting snagged and not reaching to the top of the tank. It may be a very poor description of the issue though.

The fuel dot issue is called the fuel sending unit. There was a recall for that. I had the same problem and took it in, they swapped out the fuel sending unit and all is good. Just take it to the dealership it's covered due to the recall.

Tick on the back is the wheel bearing or some crap that needs to be lubed

The gas thing... Every Z has it, and it's not a recall, but a TSB

but is it OK that the sound becomes more... raw above 5000? it just sounds bad, so i tried to stay below most of the time (good thing the car has so much torque).
Clutch is another issue - very high and makes weird noises sometimes when it's depressed.

wheel bearing - is it something serious? i drove 4000 hard KMs with it...

Gas thing - is there an important reason to fix it? it's not really an issue for me, just strange.

thanks

Just hammer on it. That is the VQ37VHR winding up. Your just getting into the sweet spot at 5k rpm.

Yea I'm having the same issue about the loud noise around 5 rpm. It sounds like something is gonna blow up and I freak out when I'm driving. I thought something was wrong w/ my car or that my mods may have messed up the car. Are you guys ABSOLUTELY sure that's ok?

Buy an extended warranty if you can and just continuously mash on it, if it goes pop, free motor, if it doesn't, at least you had fun beating it

Actually, yeah. What's the purpose of a sports car if you can't beat on it?

red2010z 07-07-2013 08:11 AM

So much torque? LOL you sure you driving a Z?

Chuck33079 07-07-2013 08:30 AM

Engine noise and transmission noises are completely normal. Just get used to it. That's just how these cars are.

megalapagas 07-07-2013 10:55 AM

Sweet you're from the Valley?! Nice! There aren't too many Zs over here in Brownsville. But back to the subject. Yea I get kinda freaked out when I'm pushing over 5000 rpm and God forbid something messed up on my car. Ill just drive off a cliff or something.

with that you're right, but lets go back a bit:

Me: i hear strange noises from the engine above 5000 RPM.
You: buy an extended warranty and keep killing it until your engine dies.

Well i was driving a Miata before so... :icon17:
And in any case, I was driving the Z up the alps, torque is just fine (even though one can always use more power...)
