I have a 2012 Nismo, have 8500 miles on it, and I doubt I drive my car as "hard" as others, but I pretty much gas it every time I take off (changing gears every 3000-3500 rpm); however, tonight I heard the strangest noise (for the first time). The light changed red, put it in neutral, stopped, and heard an almost grinding/clunking noise. Pushed in the clutch it went away. Back in neutral same sound again. The light turned green so I took off, pulled into a parking lot, but now it "seems" as though the noise quit.

Any other experiences out there?

Flywheel chatter. Every Z has it. The lighter the flywheel, the louder it is.

funny thread

I have been having trouble with my car lately. It hasnt been "slipping" but its like it doesnt want to go into gear/changing gears roughly (manual transmission) and sometimes even makes a really short griding sound, like the gears arent wanting to fit with each other smoothly. Its the worst going into 2nd, and i have been "babying" my car while shifting lately, it sucks. Is this my clutch or tranny and what do I need to do to fix the problem? Someone please help its driving me crazy.

Also i got the car from a previous owner at about 21k miles and its at 37k now. I never have changed/added/flushed my tranny fluid....

I been a mechanic my whole life and have owned motorcycles and manual shift vehicles and without a doubt this transmission is the worst I have ever encountered. The car has such great potential but the transmission feels sub par. 1st gear is a joke. On take off the car feels like you can only go twenty feet before shifting. It is really easy to miss shifts and the gear box sounds like a box of rocks and the tranny feels as though the design is inadequate to provide proper power transfer.
I wish the car would of come with a automatic because shifting manualy hardly seems to be worth the effort. Kinda bumed really because I do like the car but this manual is a disapointment.
Does anybody honestly like this transmission?

I honestly like my Manual Tranny... :driving:

I agree with the assessment that 1st gear is shorter than it could/should be, but many of those on here who race or are just looking for faster 0-60 and 1/4 mile times have gone to a higher geared rear end, which will make the quicker off the line, and shorten shift times even more.
Another solution for those looking to lengthen their time between shifts, for a more tractable daily driver is to swap out the 6MT 3.74 final drive for the 7AT 3.357. I know one poster on here did that and loved the result.
I have not found it necessary to do so as yet, but I may at some point.

I run mt-90 in my car. I haven't had a problem shifting yet, however when I had all stock fluids in the car (prior to 30k service interval) it would miss shifts all the time. Since using redline products I don't have a problem at all quick shifting. It is a hair slower than my mustangs I used to have but all in all im not dis satisfied with it.

Needs to be serviced every 30k if I recall right...also the colder outside it is the thicker the gearoil hence the struggle to shift. I have a thicker oil and when I park my car outside and I have to drive it when its cold I take my time shifting.

I love the Z's transmission. It's not quite as good as the one in my S2000, but still up there.

Interesting. I'd be curious to know what this is.

I bought my Z new, and since day one it's occasionally felt like the transmission almost wants to grind going from 1-2 (and 1-2 only). These are casual, commuting-to-work shifts. It's always when it's cold out (<40 F), and always when the transmission/engine is cold. It almost feels like I don't have the clutch in enough, even though my foot's on the floor. It doesn't make any noise but I can feel it in the stick. Once warmed up, shifts are smooth.

It's not gotten any more frequent or worse in the 1 year and 12K miles that I've put on the car, and I'm still on the factory fluids (except oil & gas, obviously). I chalk it up to being "normal" along with all the other clunky behaviors of this transmission.

I don't dislike the Z's manual, it's just particular about how it's driven. She's a sensitive girl. She doesn't like the cold. Part of the fun of owning a manual. :icon23:

Nismo is only 6 speed. Base and Sport Package come in 7 speed auto with Paddle Shifters

Manual transmission in this car is adequate...not great...not terrible. It doesn't like to be rushed. Mine has gotten smoother with 18k miles. Skipping gears is smooth as long as I pause just briefly at neutral between the gears.

It is what it is...

Fearless_Z 02-15-2013 04:31 PM

:iagree:

The transmission (manual) doesn't seem like it likes to be rushed to me either. But i still like it. Its a little clunky and loud but i like to hear my Z talk to me. :driving:
