Forced Induction Capable clutches
 

I'm not sure ifI should put this here or in FI. Anyways, I have a few questions. As many know, my car is out at GTM getting twin SC's installed. I recently bought a JWT clutch and flywheel to pair up with it thinking it should be able to hold the power just fine. I emailed GTM on this and they are absolutely fine with installing it, but said it was not a worthwhile upgrade for forced induction and said it is not going to hold much more over stock. I tried to do my research and didn't see any issue with the JWT besides minor complaints with flywheel chatter. I was under the assumption that it would be okay.

So now I have this clutch/flywheel I don't know if I should install it or go with their recommendation which is the twin clutch OS Giken. It is absolutely the better of the two, but it is incredibly expensive. Superchargers generally don't generate as much torque as turbo's, so this leaves me even more perplexed. So as to prevent this from happening to others, what is everyone else using with their FI'd vehicle? What are other shops recommending?

The twin clutch is the way to go if your wallet permits. Mine didn't.

I gave Joe at Z-Speed a call. Explained to him what I'm installing, the HP and Torque numbers that I'm expecting and the type of driving I plan on doing with the car. He suggested a Southbend Stage 3 clutch and fly wheel. He said it will hold without issue with the numbers I'll be making.

I don't know what the JWT is like other than the noise of the flywheel sounds like a tractor.

I'm using a Spec stage 2+ with their lightened steel flywheel. It holds the power just fine. I was told that it would be good to 600ish ft/lbs of torque at the flywheel. It's a little more annoying to drive, but not too bad. The flywheel makes a LOT of noise, though. It was also fairly reasonably priced through NST.

So what is the general consensus using the JWT clutch/flywheel with forced induction?

Does JWT have ratings on their website for HP/TQ (usually TQ)?
That is how I am basing my upgrade on when my stock one goes, I don't need anything over a 2+ so that narrows me down to a clutch/flywheel setup which is rated for around 400lb of TQ.

Mine is pretty basic. 1pc flywheel and ceramic disk. It's great for daily driving, and it handles the heat stress well.

Depends on how much power you are going to make. I have used their clutch loved it (with my G35) I do have a few friends that have had FI cars like 350s or g35s with JWT clutches I think if you make more then 450-500tq I would stay away. One more thing you need to know I don't know if you know or not but with light weight flywheels you will hear the clutch chatter. It never bugged me but some people find it to be annoying. Hope this helps

Reading their site, it says it will work for boosted cars. I'm just gonna run with it. It can't be any worse than stock. I have OS Giken money to spend, but that is money I can put somewhere else if the clutch/flywheel I got is fine. The $1,000+ I'm saving can go towards other mods I still want. My suspension and diff are bone stock, I still rock SP rims (I like em), there are no body mods, no interior mods. Literally, all my money is in the motor and cooling it ROFL.

i like my clutch not boosted yet tho so cant help that much

After speaking sam from gtm a few days ago he told me the stock clutch is good for around 580ish tested by him... Iam planning on keeping my stocker until it gives out... Cant wait to see your results..

I agree with that statement about Southbend clutches. I run the GTM SC stage 1.5 and with the slightly heavier Southbend flywheel, it is quiet and never slips, no matter how hard I run at the 1/4 mile. Runs perfect in the street and never is hard to drive.

GTM emailed me back and clarified their recommendation. JWT uses the same friction material as stock, just slightly larger and the pressure plate provides increased clamping force. I would recommend OS Giken if I had OS Giken money too, but with the kind of money I already committed to them, I couldn't justify that large of a purchase when what I just bought would work just fine.

I agree witrh GTM about JWT clutch/flywheel has no place in a FI setup. I know a LOT will disagree with me but I've run a JWT setup, Z_speed Southbend, and driven a carbonetics dual clutch setup.

Loved the dual clutch setup and I'm impressed with the Southbend clutch. Just hated the noise, vibration and performance of the JWT and won't go back.

I got a great deal on a OS Giken dual clutch setup that I will replacing the Southbend setup, in the future.

Bottom line is that if I'm spending monies to have something installed, I only want to do it once and do it right the first time. So I like to install something excellent and never have to worry about it again.

Southbend really does make quality units for the price. I'll do a writeup on the JWT clutch and flywheel down the road when I can drive the car again. Thanks for the opinions and the info. I would say though that GTM did state that the JWT unit will work fine with FI, it was a personal preference for them, they did not say it didn't belong in there. After I burn through this clutch, or if I don't like it, I'll upgrade to something else.
