I smell burning oil

Hey guys, I have TP's and a 25 row oil cooler, and a lot of the time, especially after spirited driving, I see the oil temp raise to about 190 degrees and I get a nice whiff of burning oil... I use Nissan Ester Oil and I'm at about 3k miles on the oil, and my dipstick is EXACTLY at the full dot... I haven't topped off, nothing...

Any ideas? Or is this normal?

Maybe you have a leak and you smell it when it comes in contact with the hot engine. I would check the oil cooler lines also to make sure they're not leaking anything.

I have an oil cooler and I can smell hot oil after the driving. If there is no leak, you'll be ok.

Well, the oil level not having dropped leads me to believe that the lines are ok, I did check it about 500 miles ago to make sure the rubbing points were ok (used tubing to cover existing lines) and there is no oil drops in the garage either...

On second look, the oil smells a bit... Gasoline-y...

But the oil temp doesn't even get close to burning temps, and it REALLY smells like oil... Normally I'll smell the death of test pipes, but occasionally I'll only smell oil

Correct me if I'm wrong but the test pipes can give off a awful smell as well.

The gasoline smell is normal with test pipes. I have it too

That's the smell of you killing our ozone. j/k lol

Make sure you're actually smelling oil. I've found that the rich mix of gasoline and the smell of test pipes can combine to smell way too much like oil.

It smells like oil, even my other buddies are like, sweet, so new engine for you because it's consuming oil? Lol

I did order a blackstone testing kit... But does anyone know if they qualify the amount of gas is in your oil? I know they do Antifreeze/coolant level

O&G 10-15-2012 07:59 PM

normal smell w/ your mods. No leaks or level change, then you A ok!

DR_ 10-15-2012 08:01 PM

Yes they give you a percent of fuel in the sample.
