Twm short shifter problems

So guys i bought the twm shirt shifter and installed it myself then reinstalled it again because it didnt feel right. Im having concerns with it. When i drive it has a hard time switching gears stops in neutral then goes into gear. Shouldn't it be smooth from one gear to the next? Also it is grinding the gears even with my foot all the way down on the clutch and idk why its doing that. I loosened the linkage bolt to see if that helps. It didnt. So if anyone knows about what i can do or what the problem is that would b great! This was my first time installing a shifter on my own car was an easy install and everything lined up correctly but if yall have advice please let me know. Otherwords i may be selling this

Anyone know anything?

cdoxp800 10-10-2012 05:41 PM

I had Zero issue with mine..

GaleForce 10-10-2012 08:20 PM

No issues with mine either. Sorry I can't be more help. Have you tried contacting TWM?

LukasC 10-10-2012 11:53 PM

Hmm no i havnt talked to them about it i might try that but its weird that nobody has this problem. I noticed too that when ur at a stand still it feels sooo smooth like butter but when driving it is notchy and doesnt feel smooth. Idk what to do

LukasC 10-10-2012 11:54 PM

Synchros or clutch not working right maybe?

Boost_lee 10-11-2012 01:30 AM

Could be, but you said this started with the shifter install right? Have you thrown the stock one back in to see if the issue goes away?

Vichtz 10-11-2012 01:40 AM

I just dropped a B&M SS into the Z and noticed it was a bit notchy at first, but it worked into smoothness. Also, the first go round, I installed the plate that stops the shifter from drifting too far right the wrong way, and that definately affected thow smooth it felt. I dont know if the TWM has this plate. GL solvin this one man

LukasC 10-11-2012 01:46 AM

Yeah it started with the shifter install so idk. And it has that plate too u have to have it to keep from going in reverse on accident. But its mostly notchy from 1st to second and 4th to fifth is hard too which could b that plate. Lee if u have thirty minutes sometime today or tomorrow to look at it that would b great! How long did it take to go away? And it grinds the gears pretty bad and idk if its me or the shifter or what. I dont think its me cuz it does it even with the clutch to the floor before moving the shifter.

Boost_lee 10-11-2012 02:00 AM

Maybe Friday if you're in the area

Vichtz 10-11-2012 02:04 AM

shoot I didnt realize Lee was in the SA area. It took at least a day of driving around, but if it still grinds with your clutch to the floor, that sounds like something else.

edub370 10-11-2012 08:26 AM

short shifters on these cars in general make me nervouse since i've already had one set of synchros fail on me(new trans ftw)!

LukasC 10-11-2012 09:58 AM

Oh really? Man thats crazy that ur synchros went bad and they got u a new tranny. Yea lee ill text you tomorrow i get out of utsa at noon and im off all night. Well idk it just doesnt feel good at all and there was no problems before the shifter installed. Last thing i want to do is get new gears cuz they are rounded off from this thing

Boost_lee 10-11-2012 11:36 AM

If you can meet me at 1pm around Bandera and 1604 that will work

It's not going to be smooth. You whet from a Plastic bushing to a metal bushing.

LukasC 10-11-2012 03:20 PM

Lee yeah ill neet u over there at 1 i guess barnes and nobles or what?

I think i might have figured out the deal with it is though. When i shift hard i think its getting caught half way into the slot and not going all the way into gear. When i drive casually nothing happens and feels really good. Idk if its me not used to it right or i need to shift differently but when i grandma shift and pull it really hard so i know its all the way in gear its fine. Could that be it? Its stopping partway in gear and not falling into gear like it should? I know that spring is suppose to push it into gear once u get it semi towards the desired gear. Hmmmm i wonder

I have a TWM S-s and zero issue since 2 years (I also track the car). I would:
- Go back to stock and see if the issue is still there.
- Reinstall the TWM with a mecanic friend (whatever is the result in step #1);
- Contact TWM if the issue remains.
Keep us posted.

LukasC 10-12-2012 09:12 AM

Yeah i installed it with a mechanic friend. Last night i took it apart and played with it to see if there was something wrong with the plate and other things. Put some more grease down in the joint too. And put it back together. This morning drove it around and it seems to b a lot better! Not sure exactly what it was but that roughness is almost gone entirely. Maybe it just wasnt sitting right in there or something. Idk. But atleast its better. If it goes back to its old ways i will let you guys know!
