Belt disintegrated...

Was having a bit of fun on the back roads 2 hours away from home & out of nowhere, got a sound like a bunch of rocks under the car.. Battery and e brake lights came on, pulled over, found the belt in a million pieces.

Got towed back to the shop, wondering how the hell could it get chewed up like this :/

Wow, it could be a number of things from a defective belt to an animal chewing on it. How many miles were on the car? Thankfully the VQ is a non-interference engine so throwing a belt won't turn your engine into a large piece of scrap metal!

Could be a defective belt/tensioner and some added abuse.

he's talking about the accessory belt, VQ has a timing chain, and it is definitely an interference engine.

I was able to drive it about 15 minutes on battery power, got close enough to town to get a tow.

Still waiting to find out if anything happened

red6spd 07-30-2012 08:12 PM

Wow. Yea how many miles ? Any aftermarket pullies?

How many miles on the car? Have you ever inspected the belt for cracks/tears? Just asking.

DjSquall 07-31-2012 05:09 AM

54,000 hard km on the car. And nope, never checked the belt, I'm sure the guys at the shop did though.

Also, no pulleys or anything else. I only changed the rims & suspension.

I meant interference off the belt, you're right.

The warranty ran out at 48,000. My drivetrain is till 100,000km, but I really don't think the belt would be covered under that.

red6spd 07-31-2012 05:27 PM

Wow. Well I guess I better keep an eye on mine.

DjSquall 07-31-2012 05:55 PM

Update from the shop: all the pulleys & tensioner are ok, new belt was put on, car is running again.

Now I'm just waiting on tires & other work to get done.

MattP725 07-31-2012 08:44 PM

Prob just a fluke... maybe you got lubricant of some sort on the belt combined with the high RPMs and it just slipped. Hard to do but not impossible. Belt must have been a bit stretched or worn.

DjSquall 08-03-2012 05:19 PM

Well, got another update. Most of my work was done & had the car put back together for the weekend...

A/C isn't working. So, lucky me, I have it under warranty for another 6,000 km and going to take it in to the dealership on Tuesday to get the compressor and/or it's clutch replaced. Ugh...
