guess i goofed. hope everything is ok.

so i was driving in full auto mode, just accelerating normally, when i accidentally bumped the shift knob up into neutral at around 40mph. rpm's jumped to around 5k. of course when they settled down i put in back in drive, (while still moving). drove the next day and everything seemed fine. any idea if i may have broken anything?

You are fine bro.

7AT has safety measures built in place for things like this. Basically, the car will not let you screw things up although, I'm sure you could find a way if you really tried!

edub370 05-24-2012 07:30 AM

lol you're alright. 5k in neutral isnt gonna hurt anything

Pauly 05-24-2012 07:36 AM

thanks everybody.

She's dead Jim...

But really, you could throw a dove at the engine and probably do more damage than the no damage you did. :p

RandyD 05-24-2012 09:03 AM

i took mine to 8k on the dragon.. hope it's ok..

you should be fine :)

fuct 05-24-2012 09:41 AM

on my drive home from the dealer ship with only 20 miles on the OD i was in 5th (manual tranny) and upon going into 6th i bumped the gate into 4th. SRM jumped the rpms to almost 6.5k rpm!!!

i know the feeling, but your fine. consider it you letting the engine know whats coming... :)

yea other than being an idiot, im pretty easy on her. im always gonna be paranoid after that POS pontiac grand am i had years ago, but i wouldnt even call that thing an automobile. an automobile is something that transports you from point A to point B right? just one of many examples of a trip in that thing, i was driving along (30k miles on the dash) and THE ENGINE FELL OUT OF THE CAR dragging it to a stop. true story

LOL, when I saw him worrying about revving to 5k in neutral I was thinking to myself "do you know the sh1t I put mine thru?? Bouncing off the rev limiter is nothing new to my Z" :bowrofl:

i was more concerned about the tranny, since i just tossed it in neutral then back in drive after i realized i wasnt in manual mode. but everything is ok

I feel you. This is something i always had in mind was terrible for the transmission, you know being an AUTO and all.

I'm thinking the mods are asleep and the joining process needs something :(

Just the other day, I was driving the G37 and using the shifter to up and downshift instead of the paddles, and when I reached over, I bumped it out of manual into D, and "upshifted" into neutral, which caused me to rev up pretty high. Except I instinctively put it back into drive too soon, before the revs died back down completely (was probably around 3.5k). The car jerked as it went back into gear and I got extremely worried. But nothing bad has happened from it. And I think if you let the engine revs die down first, it wouldn't be bad to the car at all.

I've been doing that for the past 9 years (~100,000 miles) on my 2003 Hyundai Santa Fe. It has a stick shift mode and sometimes I think it is there, but is not :eekdance:. I go from drive (thinking that I am upshifting) to neutral and then back again without any incidents.

If a POS Hyindai can handle it, I'm sure the Z can as well. Just don't do a 7,500 RPM neutral slam and all will be right with the world.

My friend discovered you can do neutral dumps a few years ago in his suburban. hit 4.5K and went from N to D. Blew the diff. Good story.
