just bought used Nismo, think it has an oil cooler...

I am pretty sure it had one installed already, looking at the front of the car it would be on the lower right hand corner of the radiator, right? I read a lot about this sometimes preventing oil from getting up to operating temp, what exactly is a good temp to consider "operating temperature"? Mine hasn't gone over 170 yet....

RCZ 04-12-2012 01:24 PM

I always like to be around 180...car seems to like that temp.

speedfreek 04-12-2012 01:28 PM

Yea 180 is a good temp in general. Wait til summer temps and see how hot it gets. I am sure you wont stay at 170. The '12's come with a factory oil cooler but my oil temps are already in the 200-220 range in daily driving.

JAYNO20 04-12-2012 03:45 PM

Well it is kinda cool here as far as outside temps go... Around 40-45ish. Does it sound like it may have one?

nabenson 04-12-2012 03:48 PM

Make sure you're not confusing the power steering cooler with an oil cooler. The best / easiest way is to get under the car, pull the black plastic off, and see if you have lines running from the oil filter to anywhere (there will be a metal sandwich between the oil filter and the engine block / filter mount that has hoses coming and going from it).

can you tell what kind it is/how many row cooler it is?

daisuke149 04-13-2012 07:48 AM

thats def an oil cooler. check to see if you have a thermostatic plate next and if you don't. id add one.

corbin09 04-13-2012 10:25 AM

Looks like a 24 row kit.

roy'sz 04-13-2012 12:59 PM

Looks like a nisan motorsports kit. If it is hit up z1 for the mocal thermostatic adater and the oil lines....should be about$300 total.

Where would that be? And what extra steps would I have to take for an oil change?

roy'sz 04-13-2012 01:54 PM

look where the oil filter is on the bottom of your car. You need to jack it up and follow the outline of the plastic shroud plate. The back 4 bolts that are 10mm you need to take off and fold the plastic back. you will see the oil filter and the two oil hoses. I am 99% sure you don't have the thermostatic plate because of it being the nissan kit. The reason why I know this is becase the hoses are typically wrapped up on top of the oil cooler like the third picture you took, that and the hoses nissan uses are red and blue. No extra steps in doing a oil change, but if you want to swap over then use z1

roy'sz 04-13-2012 01:55 PM

oh and its a 34 row kit :)

MacLean 04-13-2012 04:03 PM

Sweet deal man...... I heard that the '12 came with oil cooler, but wasn't sure. Now I know for sure.

That's not a factory oil cooler.

MJB 04-13-2012 05:20 PM

OP, the front damper was removed also... Not really a big deal but you may get a slight vibration/noise at higher speeds.

So I won't need to drain this separately to get all the used oil out? And would the damper that was removed not fit with the cooler there or what?

roy'sz 04-13-2012 10:15 PM

customer previous of you decided to remove it probably because they wanted to track it and wanted more air flow. I have had my cooler for 22k and never emptied the cooler out because it gets mixed with 5qts good oil. It really doesn't matter too much it won't effect the motor in any bad way.

daisuke149 04-14-2012 04:03 PM

Would the damper be visible from.the shots he took? U only have to.flip the damper on tthe 34 row which makes me believe it would be higher up jayno dont buy one yet. Figure it all out 100% first

Yeah I went out and looked, its not there. There are 2 bolts on both ends where the damper would mount, but its definitely gone. I am going to be getting a thermostatic plate for it since I will be driving it during the winter so I'll have all this stuff off and I would like to put the damper back on around the same time.

So, where can I get a damper at a good price? And where can I find a thermostatic plate for this particular oil cooler?

daisuke149 04-15-2012 01:01 AM

If I am reading right, this thermostatic plate here:

Oil Cooler Thermostatic Sandwich Plate Conversion Kit

the actual thermostat is located in the sandwich plate between the filter and where it attaches to the engine, right? Also if I do have the Nissan motorsports cooler, am I going to run into any problems with the hoses themselves not working with the different fittings provided in this kit?

phillip2010Z 04-15-2012 05:57 PM

all Z's should come with a oil cooler. 220 on any giving day for me, and i hate it!

It also has to-do with where you live too. Since we are both in TX the oil cooler temp is going to get up there for sure. Yeah having the oil cooler at 170-180 would be great, but I really do not care as long as the car is not over heating.:icon14:

phillip2010Z 04-15-2012 06:26 PM

True, But the MODS I'm sure don't help. Your right Texas and its dry heat, Its hotter than hell in El Paso in the Summer.

I wouldn't want to go balls to the wall during the day. Night time would be better for higher speed b/c it will be a little bit cooler.

phillip2010Z 04-15-2012 06:32 PM

LOL a few degrees lol. I came from Killeen. So its just as bad. I usually only gun it at the track. for awhile 16 seconds.

ScGRaceR 04-15-2012 06:34 PM

lucky hahaha!

roy'sz 04-15-2012 07:21 PM

I got the kit form nissan for free and installed for free. When I went to change to the thermostatic sandwich adapter I ran into the hose problem. Nissan did it *** backwards with their hoses so you won't be able to use them. What you need to do is contact z1 and order hoses and the mocal adapter plate from them. When you get the chance print out the installation directions and it will be self explanatory after that.
