2k Idle, 230 Oil Temp, High Rev Hang, Help!

Hey everybody, any help at all is appreciated. I cant seem to find much on this problem, and most people report cars idling high at 1k RPM, nobody seems to have a problem as bad as this one. And even those people dont seem to offer solutions. Here are the symptoms:

While driving and the car heats up, the oil temps hit about 200 which is normal for my car. then all of a sudden it will get really bad rev hang. Like, 20 seconds to drop 1K RPM. That makes it hard to shift and it does it with S mode on and off. When I put it in neutral it will stop falling and sit idling at 2K RPM. If I rev it up, it will sometimes go back down to a normal 600. I am guessing it's because of the constantly high RPM, but my oil is hitting 230 degrees and maintaining that temp.

I went all over the Gen III I have installed a long time ago and found some loose hoses. Tightened them and it all seemed fine yesterday. Now today it is doing it again. Checked the intake and its all still tight. It seemed to have done this after I installed my Stillen exhaust, but when I had it in the air, I couldnt find any exhaust leaks. I installed it about 700 miles ago, and it started acting up at around 500 miles ago. I will put it back up in the air and check the exhaust again when I get home and have a lift, but for now I am out of town and cant do that. Anybody else have ideas?

Ive had the same exact thing happen to me a few times last summer (and once this year so far). With mine, there is a definite association with this happening after hard driving.

I am completely stock, btw.

Yeah? Maybe its a heat issue? Mine does it even when I am not driving it hard. I just drove about 20 min down the road with normal shifting and it still got really hot and did it. My water temp is always normal but the oil starts really climbing

If it's not a giant vacuum leak, the other possibility is that the intakes are moving around and giving big MAF sensor misreads.

I'd carefully inspect everything along the intake tract for leaks (test by spraying carb cleaner -- if rev changes, you found your leak!).

Might also be worth inspecting the exhaust just before or just after primary O2's for leaks.

After that, see how secure the intakes themselves are. If you can easily move them around, try to bolt them down better.

I've had this before and after the SC install. Never found out what it was and it stopped for a long time then randomly like 3 weeks ago my idle is hanging at ~1100.

The rev hanging hasnt happened in a while but my clutch finally started to give way after 10k on the SC and thats when all this started up again so thats making me wonder too...sticky clutch?

bkaeser 04-09-2012 09:52 PM

well my clutch isnt acting up right now. A few thousand miles ago I had to replace the Clutch master cylinder, which nissan said wasnt part of the drive train so I had to pay for. Bull **** in my opinion. If it deadlines the drive train how is it not covered by drivetrain warranty? Anyways, I'll check closer for vacuum leaks and throw it on the lift and check for exhaust leaks again. Maybe something wiggled loose.

Sounds like a vacuum issue!

Hasn't acted up in a few days, maybe tightening up the Air intake was the problem and now the ECU has readjusted to the normal air amount

everything ran good for a while, then all of a sudden I take it out last night and it is doing it again. I have no idea. Anybody?

I've heard that the TB's on these engines are known to mysterious fail...

Spray carb cleaner under the hood while the car is running to test for leaks. If all is good, you might just have to bring it in to the dealer -- still under warranty, right?

bkaeser 04-15-2012 09:27 AM

It's under drivetrain warranty. Hope that covers throttle body. I figured it would cover clutch master cylinder but it didnt

Last fall, the bro's red 370Z had the same symptoms, high idle, even threw a CEL code P0170 I believe. Would have to check the paperwork for sure. Any-who dealer spent hours diagnosing it to to no end. They called Nissan Tech Support Line and they said to check the grounds. I believe there are 4 or 5 ground spots on the 370Z. So they found the engine to firewall ground was rusty.....bam...cleaned it up and has not happened again. Just a thought if Jordo's suspicions don't pan out. g/l.

thanks. guess I'll try to find the grounds. Im running out of idea. Probably just gonna take it to the dealer cus it's still acting up
