2012 Oil Cooler ?

So I recently purchased a 2012 z, I would like to do some HPDE's but I doubt that the stock water to oil cooler will help much with temps. I would like to install an after market, probably a 34r since I live in Florida and overcooling is pretty much going to be impossible. My question is how would this work with the oil to water cooler that came with the car, would I have to remove the factory cooler?
thanks for your help.

Do you track the car? I haven't gone past 235-240deg yet while driving spirited here in South Florida. The factory cooler is going to be more than fine for you unless you're Auto-Xing the Z

You should be able to. The aftermarket cooler uses an adapter that goes between the filter and the mounting base, as does, I believe, the factory one. Regardless, you can put a second one in there.

You mean like a second sandwich adapter? Wouldn't that push the filter out too far?

The oem adapter would need to be removed and the coolant lines either plugged or joined with a coupler so the coolant is still circulating

yes I will be tracking the car. I was afraid that I would have to remove the stock oil cooler and figure out something for those lines :shakes head:, although it would be really cool if someone came up with a way to utilize both the oil to air and water to oil cooler.

IMHO:

1) Whether the 2012 oil:water cooler is sufficient for light track duty (HPDE, Auto-X, etc) has yet to be accurately reported here AFAIK. It might be interesting to go out at least once with just that and see how it goes, it's possible that it's enough.

2) Even if it's insufficient, the big upside of having any oil:water interface is that your warmup times should go down a lot and temps should stabilize more in general (versus just a large air cooler), so I'd be hesitant to just toss it.

3) You *could* double-stack the sandwiches and fit a regular-sized oil-filter, but it may not be as mechanically reliable as a single adapter. Unfortunately, I don't think there will be any reasonable way to re-use the stock oil:water and add an air cooler without double-stacking.

Probably the ideal solution (if there were a readily available kit that were easy to install) would be a single non-thermo adapter plate running short lines to a larger oil:water interface like we've seen in pics of the AM Performance cars, which they're running in Grand-Am races without additional oil cooling AFAIK, so more than enough for the rest of us (pictured below, looks like it's welded to the beam in front of the engine and right behind and inline with the lower radiator hose):

Why not try it out as stock and if you have cooling issues you could upgrade your radiator and fans to the ones Z1 sells. That way your coolant temps drop and your oil temps should follow.
