New flywheel + clutch?

Anyone swap the stock flywheel and clutch for something different yet? Outperformance has a post with an option.

Soon. I know someone on here who has a flywheel and clutch in hand waiting to go in. :D

^^ i lost the bet.....oh well............ ur Z is busy with Berk's 135i

M.Bonanni 05-13-2009 11:38 AM

lol yep. although a clutch/flywheel might be in my near future.

i didn't even know they made cat-backs, i thought it was just HFC's.......... lol
they didnt make a cat-back for the G37

They will make a G37 cat-back based off of the 370Z one.

time to spread the word there.....lol......

20 lbs. savings is pretty serious. There should be some nice responsiveness out of that (not to mention, it's a pretty decent way to drop 20 lbs.)

What I was thinking...

ZYUL8R 05-16-2009 02:10 PM

I had ACT F&C in my 350z...I gotta have it for my 370z. Ill be looking for a prolite flywheel, and the R6 solid puck clutch.

GaryTheSnail 05-16-2009 02:51 PM

Won't the 20 pound weight reduction on the flywheel drop the RPM's quicker between shifts? If so how dramatically will they drop compared to the stock flywheel?

Dave

And have we determined the effect of these types of things on the synchro rev match?

Yes, it will. I am not sure, but I would suppose it would be similar to doing the same mod on the VQ35. It looks like some of the flywheels and clutches designed for the 350Z could be used on the 370Z, so perhaps some 350Z owner (or former) experienced in this could shine a light?

That's a great question. I suppose we won't know until someone tries this.

I'm a little concerned about street behavior. Dropping a 20 lbs. will drastically change the rotational inertia of the flywheel.

ZYUL8R 05-16-2009 06:54 PM

Yes it will change the inertia of the flywheel, you are correct.

Usually you have to get up more revs before you engage the clutch to prevent stalling it. But its not all too bad, you just get to relearn your clutch.

The lower the flywheel inertia will allow downshifts to be smoother since the engine will rev more quickly. Also upshifts will be smoother since the engine will derev more quickly to the proper RPM.

On my old set up shifts came lightning quick as the clutch engagement was pretty much immiediate. Heel toe'in was a breeze too.

I can't wait to try it with S-mode...it should make our synchro-rev match work a whole lot better.

I wonder if our clutch is still 2-piece, and I wonder if it's the culprit of the rattling clunking noise. I know the throwout bearing makes noise after a few hundred miles.

I've never had an aftermarket clutch (6 years with 350Z never replaced), but it would be nice to improve things here and there (slave cylinder, fluid, lines, etc.?)

I had the JWT clutch and flywheel installed this week... fits... haven't had it down from the lift for test drive yet, lots of other stuff going on... can follow on my journal... will update on results there next week and perhaps here as well

Doing a little math: The JWT unit says it's 15.4 lbs and 45% lighter than stock. That implies the stock unit is 28 lbs (28 x .55 = 15.4) and the weight savings would be 12.6 lbs (28-15.4). Not as much as what people in this thread were stating. Does that make it less scary? Who knows. The decrease in the moment of interia could be even more than the decrease in weight, depending on how it is constructed.

travisjb 05-29-2009 11:03 PM

See my journal... I have the JWT flywheel and clutch in now... no adverse effects... overall, I'd say it is easier to shift gears (clutch pedal force), engagement points in clutch pedal stroke are more natural to me, SRM works PERFECTLY with the setup, and the thing revs up and down like a MF'er ! With the b&m shift kit as well, I'm more confident and faster shifting, no over-revs between up shifts that i've noticed, and I can go on... I'm very pleased so far and tentatively recommend both!! I'll strike the tentative after I've had it in for a few weeks and a track day or two
