Accessing ECU

Is there any way to access ECU data? I want to find out how fast (Top speed) my car was driven in the last day or so.
I know in the GTR you can access that data with the consult, but dealer says they can't do it with the 370.

Is there an aftermarket option?

why does the scene from feris buller come to mind here?

A friend, who borrowed the car, got a ridiculous ticket. He didn't even realize he was speeding yet cop stuck him real bad. I careless if he was driving the car fast or not, I just want to help him fight it.

If I can print the data and give it to him, he can present it in the court, or he's facing tough penalties.

BTW, the guy has not gotten a ticket, of any sort, in last FOUR YEARS.
So it would be a shame to let something like this ruin his driving history.

So he was, in fact...speeding? I don't think the ECU stores this data but hey, I could be wrong. I would however be surprised if a court let you submit it as evidence to clear a ticket. ;)

if he was speeding it was his own fault

I don't think so. Aftermarket ECU readers pick up data in real time and some stored info, but I don't think the Z ECU keeps top speed recorded.

Well, to be more precise, aftermarket OBD-II tools read live data via the standard semi-open protocols. They also read a few other things, like freeze frame data from logged faults (e.g. if you had a cylinder misfire, you could pull up a snapshot of all sorts of info, including vehicle speed, from the moment of the misfire). They're not actually "ECU readers". Those tools know virtually nothing about the car's ECU or what's stored inside of it. They just get to talk to it and hear what it wants to say to them.

Nobody but Nissan really knows every little detail of what else our ECU does that isn't available over the standard mechanisms. There might even be things tucked away in there that normal dealership Consult tools can't access, but certain authorized people (factory representatives? acting on behalf of law enforcement in a major case?) can access with special Nissan software.

But none of that is going to help you with a speeding ticket, sorry.

one ticket isnt guna ruin his driving record.... easy there

anthonyy 11-02-2011 10:48 AM

^^ true it won't "ruin" it by any means but his premium will increase... Unless he has ticket forgiveness

Just have your friend hire a lawyer to get the ticket reduced...

Methodical4u 11-02-2011 02:23 PM

if he hasn't had one in four years then he could get pbj... you never said exactly how fast this "friend" was going in YOUR car either.

lawyer +1 best 500 bucks i've ever spent. 65 over in a 30 down to defective speedometer 2 points $250

No need to speculate and suggest as if I am in fact the third party; moreover, there is certainly no need for you to know what exactly he was cited for.

You sound like the 'drama queen' type.
Thank you.
